Now that I have 17" wheels

I will agree that they are not the lightest you can get but I needed some 15 rims for autox and Im happy with them.

I kinda took it off topic with the 15 rims. Sorry.

We now will attempt to resume our regular broadcasting...............

I didn't have those style rims. I had the newer style. Those were a lighter set for the early P5's.

I have an '03 and my wheels are definitely lighter than the Spicy's. We autox and during the season, we swap wheels every weekend. The daily driver rims on the Spicy are a set of P5 rims and we use the RHs for running in stock class, and they are heavy mothers. If you look at the serious MSP and MP3 autoxers, they all run lighter aftermarket rims, in the 14-17lb. range and the RHs are at least 22 lbs. on their own. I can lift 2 P5 rims w/ tires at one time, I can only lift one RH rim and tire at a time.

The RHs are an inch wider, so you do get more grip, but unless you want the height of a 17" rim, I'd recommend getting some 16"x7" rims.

well...we're talking about 17" rims....and i wouldn't consider your 15" rims as light anyways.

Kosei K1-TS = 14.1 lbs without tires. With my 215/45/17 tires, they weighed ~35lbs. The stock wheels actually feel more sluggish, but I might be crazy.

ok the stock 16" p5 wheels only wiegh like 17 maybe 18 lbs without tires, so if the msps wiegh 22 thats a big difference.
there was a thread on the wieght of them a long time ago, because i remember they weighed around less than 18, because the rotas i got weight around 16 or 17 and i remember saying thats kool an inch bigger and shave off a lbs or 2

look at post 6, it shows 16.6 lbs for those protege5 stock wheels. but yeah, lighter wheels are obviously better. the decrease in weight also means a decrease in the stress on your suspension.

didnt read through all this, just there was 2 threads gonig on saying that p5 wheels are like 20 lbs so i just jumped in to say there not.

MrValve : i have those same tires, already replaced 2 of them due to bad camber wear in the back i got about 15k ish

An important concept is "unsprung weight." This is weight that is not supported by the suspension of the car. This usually includes the the weight of the wheels and tires as well as a percentage of the weight of the suspension itself, including control arms, anti-roll bars, shocks, and struts. Reducing unsprung weight is the key to improving handling. The lower the unsprung weight, the less work the shocks and springs have to do to keep the tires in contact with the road over bumpy surfaces. An easy way to reduce unsprung weight and improve traction is to replace stock wheels and tires with special lightweight wheels. Note that as the wheel diameter or width increases, the weight of the overall wheel and tire package increases, thereby increasing unsprung weight

Also the less mass you have to rotate the better.

Thanks for the info. I'm getting an alignment tomorrow and I'll have them make special note of rear settings. I have seen other messages about P5's eating tires in the rear.

yea the camber in the rear due to it being dropped wears them out, if u do drop it without camber plates and such just rotate often. other than that i like the tires
