I hate MI in the winter. It is only Dec. 1st and we got like 6" of snow last night. And we are supposed to get alot more in the next few days. Figures since the speeds are coming in soon. damn you snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! damn you to h*ll.

Don't worry...
You're not the only one out there...In Toronto, we've been getting unpredictable snow fall each week. Sometimes it would snow hard for about half the day consistently. Or it would just snow 1 or 2 hours.
But even so, i hate how it's soo unpredictable.
I'm not taking any chance, once i take delivery, steelies and winter tires will be slapped on.:(

we got hit bad yesterday and today. 1hr and half shoveling yesterday, snow above my knees......woke up today, same f'n thing. The roads are a mess. I don't care, I want my MSP!

are you all going to change rims as well as tires? also will you be putting on snow specific or all seasons?

You'd be crazy to leave the Racing Hart rims on, you'll destroy them. And if their anything like the MP3 rims their $$$$$. Besides, a 17" winter tire would suck in the snow.

Get some cheap steelies, and some good winter tires ,maybe 15" or 16". It's worth every penney. Sure, she won't look as purdy, but when the spring comes, your wheels will still be new.

Good call, the salt would probably chew the heck out of the rims. should i just go to discount tire or belle tire, or some place like that, and just get any kind of cheap rim?

We get a lot of snow around here. I just don't see the point in spending lots of money on winter tires. People get blizzaks and I'm like why? The winter is only going to tear the s*** out of them anyways. Around here you pretty much have to just live with the fact that it's winter, your car is gonna look like crap for the entire season, and there's no point about worrying about handling because you couldn't enjoy it anyways. SO, I find the cheapest tire, the cheapest rims, stud the winter tires and I'm done. Save the big bucks for when the spring comes around for new toys.

But, it all depends on where you live. You get a lot of snow? Deep snow or slushy stuff...or maybe you just get a lot of black ice. We get everything up here, but mostly deep snow, or slushy crap up to your knees. Blackice is a good day.

Some places don't allow studs either.

Just make sure you buy a rims with the right offset, and lug pattern and s***. Search here for winter tires.

My dealer says they have steel rims (16") for the msp..... they want $1,000Cdn for a set. I haven't put snows on a car in 20 years but that price seems a bit steep to me. Anyone have any comparisons or advice???

Advice: Never buy anything you don't have to from a dealer....a good dealer will even tell you that. Go to Crappy Tire or Cosco...can probably put shoes on your car for 1/2 that amount...of course, if you're getting decent tires for that $1000...then go for it.

damn good advice Humvee.

For example: Cheap ass tire from local tire store....59.99 canadian. Add studs to that tire, 8 buck per tire. Balancing, and mounting free. Rims from said shop, 50.00 each

Now my dealer. Cheap ass tires again, but lesser quality, 89.99 each. Add studs, 14.00 per tire. Mounting and balancing 33.00. Rims 69.99 each

One adds up to 468 before tax, the other from dealer is 688.

Which one do you think I bought?

Fact, at least here, most dealers buy their tires from other tire stores. Fact most dealers don't take the time to find the best price for their tires. And of course, they add their own little sometin' to the price to make some extra cash.

So, cut out middle man, aka dealer, and get tires for much better price by buying them from the source yourself.

When, if I get the MSP. I'm finding my own rims, and tires, and telling the dealer where to get them, they will pay for them, and add it to the lease. Everyone is happy.....or at least I'm happy and that's all that matters :)

www.tirerack.com now has the MS-P in their line up for cars to select from.

4 new 15" steel rims, 4 Blizzak WS-50's size 195/55/15, and 4 wheel covers are only $484. Add s&h and they'll be at your door for ~$550.

That is pretty cheap insurance as far as I'm concerned! There would be nothing worse than trying to save a few bucks and make it through the winter on the stock tires only to end up sliding into a ditch, a gard rail, or worse another car! If you're lucky you will only damage the car. I live down here in Baltimore, MD where we only see about 3 or 4 snow falls per winter. I will certainly spring for the snow tires if I decide to purcharse the MS-P.

Thanks for all the great advice. (2thumbs) I kinda thought I was being taken for a ride before I even got my car!

Is there anything a step up from a plain steel wheel that will look better, but not cost a ridiculous amount? I'm in Toronto so I'm in snows for 3 or 4 months.... I'd pay more for a little more looks.

You could buy a 15" or even 16" alloy and mount your snows on them. You'll save quite a bit of money going with the 15" package. Tire Rack usually has packages of lower priced alloys with snow tires. Even cheaper would be a set of 15" steel wheels with hub caps, you could even get the Protege OE ones.

I may be crazy but I am going to ask my dealer to throw them in for free seeing as I have had to wait this long and they have been sitting on my $$.

Just remember that the MSP has larger 11" rotors on the front and a 15 inch rim may not fit. I haven't actually tried this yet, but the service guys that I know quite well said to go with the 16" rims for clearence.

14's fit on the mp3, I can't see why 15's won't fit the MSP. The brakes aren't that much bigger. 16's are going to be $$$$

14" wheels are stock on many European 323s/Proteges. 15" wheels should almost certainly fit on a Mazdaspeed Protege, and there's a good chance that 14" wheels would fit as well.
