Not Very Happy, 2002 Protege Poor gas mileage

I will make this post very short and to the point.
Sticker milage states 25city and 30hwy as this car is an automatic. The car currently has 20K miles on it and has gotten poor mileage from the get-go. The city mileage ranges from 19mpg-20.5mpg on average and the highway mileage ranges from 22.5mpg-24.5mpg. Gem Mazda in Tallahassee has tried to tell me the mileage values on the sticker are not generated by Mazda, but by the EPA and may not reflect what we should be getting. However, if you go to
FUELECONOMY.GOV
it clearly states the numbers are generated by Mazda on pre-production prototypes and the EPA only reverify's 10% of all models. I then called Mazda Custom Service at 12K miles in an attempt to get this issue fixed. I was told my local dealer would contact me to make an appointment. That never happened, but what did happen was Gem Mazda in Tallahassee closed out my service request from Mazda Customer Service stating they examined my car and found nothing to be wrong. That is funny, you examined my car without calling me and without my car being at your dealership. Yes folks, Gem Mazda of Tallahassee lied to Mazda Corporate regarding my car. Mazda Customer service then set up an appointment for me to actually take my car to Gem Mazda Tallahassee to have it evaluated. Before taking the car in I took several high-resolution pictures of the spark plugs which were all carbon'd and all showed signs of pinging and detonation. The pics are below. You will notice the excessive carbon buildup, but more importantly the little metal specs everywhere and the peppering on the porcelain which are all signs the car is pinging and detonating at some point within the engine map. So after the car is diagnosed they can find nothing wrong, yet they agree to replace my spark plugs. When I pick up the car I ask to see the plugs and guess what? There are no signs of any pinging or detonation on the plugs. Wow, Mazda now buys self cleaning plugs. I then produce the high resolution pictures of the plugs 8miles previous and they cannot explain why there is a difference. Guess what, 30 miles on the new plugs has generated the same excessive carbon buildup. Without getting into all the details they top it off by stating this on my invoice, "FRONT TIRES WEAR POSSIBLE AGRESSIVE DRIVING." The tires have 20K miles on them of course they have wear. BTW, they are worn more on the inside of the tire which suggest a possible need to adjust the camber. This is my wife's car who drives around my 2yr old daughter and 2month old son. I will never buy a Mazda again at this point! Buy hey, ZOOM ZOOM ZOOM!

Definitely sounds like you've got a problem there...I would try another dealer altogether, to be honest.

Also want to point something out about the fuel mileage on your sticker. That rating is generated by ONE car that was SPECIALLY PREPARED BY THE MANUFACTURER. So I never believe them. Nonetheless, your mileage should be close to that. Something along the lines of 22 city and 27 hwy.

It's a good idea to keep track of your MPG, because (as you experienced) it will often tell you when somethings not right.

Again, try a different dealer and see how it works out. Good luck!

your plugs look just like mine and I get 35-36mpg... they are normal according to my knowledge

ask yourself these 3 simple questions...
1) do you always gun it at the light (more than 50% throttle) and make the car shift over 3000rpm?
2) do you buy cheap off-brand gas (citgo, fina, racetrack, bubba's, etc)?
3) have you ever changed the air cleaner in your car?
4) do you change your oil after 3000 miles?

if you answered yes to any of those questions, then you need to stop

i just got sparkco wires and 1sts grounding kit and on a recent trip to berkley i got 32 mpg, and on the way back i got 33 mpg. Previously i was getting around 28-29. Needless to say i am happy with my purchases.

But there have been numerous complains of protege's with an auto trans having poor milage. so far i dont believe its been diagnosed.

I appreciate your comments, but I did not fall off a turnip truck when it comes to the understanding of engines. So if I answered yes to #4(do you change your oil after 3K miles?) then that has something to do with my gas mileage? I understand what you meant and yes we change our oil at the proper intervals. I have never met Bubba, but I typically purchase BP or Chevron. This car has never exceeded 25mpg on the highway and that is with the cruise control on. As far as our plugs looking the same, the carbon buildup may be a common denominator as most cars start rich to light the cat(emmissions) and then quickly run lean for economy, but their is no excuse to see signs of pinging or detonation on the plugs. Since the plug change I filled up with 89 octane and will record the city mileage come next fillup. As stated previously the car belongs to my wife and the answer to #1 and #2 is no and I checked the filter last week and it was not excessively dirty. However, I will change it to something less restrictive such as the K&N. I greatly appreciate everyones response and I will keep you updated. I am happy to see atleast someone is getting decent gas mileage with this car.

the carbon build up is not excessive and is considered normal to me considering that the stock fuel maps are not the greatest in the world and are tuned for engine reliability (run rich at times)... chevron has good gas, BUT their techron s*** happens to reduce fuel mileage... it happened to me before... thus I believe that the fuel mileage can also be related to the amount of detergents and mixture of the gas... exxon works pretty damn good for me... I am not worried about the base of the spark plug itself but the actual electrode itself... mine has that "good hot/complete burn" look to it... normal to me.. mind you I pulled my plugs at 30k... as to the oil, reduction in lubrication can hurt fuel mileage somewhat... and oil life can be reduced by using some piece of s*** aftermarket oil filter

Hey 240Z...seriously, go to another dealer. It can't hurt. Obviously Gem could give a crap about your problem as they lied to Mazda, so why beat your head against a wall?

There's gotta be another dealer within reasonable distance right? So give them a shot -- obviously Mazda is responding to your concerns; it's just the dealer that couldn't care less.

Let us know how you make out.

Thats actually 4 questions!

I've got the same overall milage, my plugs are worn pretty bad. Mine doesn't have the carbon buildup though. I would check the intake tract, and the air filter for blockage. I run the crap out of mine and get 31-33 mpg average and the lowest I ever got was 28 on a trip with the a/c on and the car loaded down through the mountains. I'd also make sure the mass air sensor and map sensor are connected well.

As for the EPA given MPG, I remember that the HW rating could range from 26-36 or so on our cars. i don't know where my window sticker is though.

I would go to a different dealer. Not all Mazda dealers are assholes and have poor customer service. What 02 Protege model is this? Have you run any fuel injection cleaner or valve cleaner through the motor?

Also the transmission might be a problem area. I use to have a 95 Honda Accord LX with an auto and it had major problems like the torque converter wouldn't lockout. Which would cause high fuel useage. Does the the motor run at high rpms with the cruise set? How does you wife drive the car? If she is on and off the throttle which will also cause high fuel useage. How do you drive the car?

Do you use the overdrive? If the overdrive is off the motor will rev higher while driving in city and highway.

What's the correct way to calculate the gas mileage?? I get almost 350 miles out of a tank of gas. I fill up when I see the light. Anyone??
