Not entirely happy with the car....

Sounds good man. Speaking of hanging out, does anyone hang out around the 757 area? DragVA is useless, its full of ultra-rice tegs and civics that are gh-ey and i'd rather not chill with them. I know this belongs in the regional forums but the topic was brought up here.

(mswerd) FLM! The revs be a humming at 65-70MPH.
I get betwix 30-36MPG dependent upon the phase of the moon and my right foot :)
I know you know what I'm talkin about!!! You've taken many a trips in da speed :D

Im happy to say Im getting excellent gas milage...the problem is your not granny shifting.

Oxymoron is getting good gas milage while having power...so if you drive conservative you'll get better gasmilage. Like try to stay out of boost. When I installed my BOV I had poor gas milage because the throttle response was better...allowing me to boost sooner. But now I shift around 3000-3500 rpm and get some pretty good milage out of it.

See, the thing is is that I'm coming from a V6 camaro where the torque hit you all at once, at around 2-2500, so then i'd shift. I shift the same way in the speed when I'm cruising, and it gets pretty decent mileage (last fill up was yesterday, got 26 average), so it is getting better. I think im gonna go get it flashed today though....

yeah welcome to the world of turbos...be glad that we have high compression for turbo cars...it could be worse. Flashing will help it out a bit.

Speaking of lower-compression..... What possessed the Mazda engineers to leave the 2.0L engine alone? Why not either stroke it to 2.3 like in the 3 and crank up the compression, leaving it N/A (harder), OR drop the compression and boost it higher, maybe 12lbs (easier)? Either way you'd have a 200hp motor easy, and I would much rather have that and pay the higher overhead cost (2-3k, maybe more) for a much better overall car. Isn't that the point of a one-off car, to make it completely unique and special? Anyone agree with me or am I talking out of my ass?

I'm guessing that Mazda wanted to make a unique edition to the Protege without upping the price too much. Using a different engine could of been even a greater risk for them. And 2000-3000$ more might not have been so appealing for everyone who got the MSP. I wouldn't of minded the extra 30+ HP but I'm not sure it would of fit my budget...

MSPinVA its all about $$$. You know car manufatuers dont just develop new engine just for 1 car. That would be too costly. the FS-DE is pretty much the only 4 cylinder mazda had at the time. Remember when the original SRT-4 spec came out? It was a supercharged 2.0L engine (neon engine) that made some real crappy hp # cuz it wasnt a FI engine. So they decided to put in the turbo PT cruiser engine in it cuz its already a production engine (and label it SRT-4). Same with Mitsubishi and there 4 banger 4g63 except that was designed to be FI.

We could argue alot of things Mazda didnt put in the car...but remember they wanted to keep the car around $20K. If you dont minda paying overhead cost...talk to the dealer about putting in low compression pistons and upping the boost. $2-3K is probally the price for all that cost. I dont think there was anyway to do anything better without bumping up cost. They could loose everythign (stero, suspenstion) I like and make the engine stronger. But this is MAzda...to them not everythign runs in a straight line.

I thought after two weeks that there was something not so pleasurable about my car anymore. It didn't seem quite as YIPEE. Then a chick sucked me off in it. Then I was ok.

they did have the 1.8L I4 from the miata. FM does a stroker kit for 2.0L. add a FMII on it and you've got about 220-250 whp. all on stock internals.

i think this car is special enough, with the MP3 bumper and/or '03.5 lip, turbo'd FS-DE bringing the 1/4 time down a good 1 second, good stereo system for people that don't know much about stereos, a great suspension for the track and local mountain, and awesome wheels. if i were to make it better, i'd just get a free flowing exhaust and be content with that for a while.
