greetings all.... NOOB here, and happy (day 2, LOL) 3rd owner of a 2002 Protege5, auto.

I want to run through it and drop some "Easy ins" ASAP - K&N air filter, probably a fuel additive/cleaner....maybe a tranny additive?

but what of something like Z-max or "slick 50"?

Purchased sunday at 124k, the prior owner has/had very good records - regular 3-4k oil changes, timing belt done already, new brakes and water pump replaced within 120 days ago....

is something like Z-max worth putting into the engine? I've heard both sides of the coin, and wonder if it will help or hinder? (dunno)

car had a squeaky clean CARFAX record, and there's nothing (inherently) wrong with it that I can tell, I just want to set it up a "smooth" as possible for my ownership....

good, or bad idea?

nah dont do zmax, i have heard some bad things about it. one thing that people have done is seafoam. search around for it and youll find everything u need to know about it.

def to the seafoam....there is a how to on what to do with it....and you can pick it up at autozone and i've seen a few walmarts that carry it

awesome, thanks - I've decided to skip anything like Z-max or slick 50 for now, too many risks I think.

will check into seafoam, and probably look to do some of the "at home" stuf for now, like clean EGM and MAF....

thanks!

Seafoam is great through your intake and gas, but I would do an auto-Rx clean and rinse application in the crankcase for a slow and thorough clean. You can only by auto-rx from their website (auto-rx.com), but they have a great forum over there and there is a ton of information and reviews of it over on bobistheoilguy.com (best oil site on the intertron).

I recommend auto-rx to everyone that buys a used car.

Cheers,

J
