So my buddy from work just picked up a 98 Monte Carlo for a couple hundred bucks being that I and some oner coworkers would help replace the rear struts since the drivers side was bent at like a 45* angle and the pass bent but not as bad.
Basically we go the struts off and started on the bad one which wasnt so bad. You take the mount off with a open end wrench with a torx bit inside and once thats off there is a steel "column" that slides over the piston that holds the metal cap on top of the dust boot.
Thing is over time that metal column gets pounded onto the piston so basically on the first one I put a pry bar on the metal cap holding dust boot and hit the end with a hammer and after a while the cap came loose from the column so I could then hit the column directly and after pounding the s*** out of that it came off
Problem being that the column wont pound off the second strut. any tips/ideas on how to get it off? Tools are limited and a bench mounted vice isnt available cuz that was my idea but I dont think we have access to one.
Hopefully if anyone has any advice I can get it before morning cuz we are meeting at work early to see if the sledge we have at work might be the necessary tool
cheers!
