Hey guys, Im kinda new to driving stick and tonight i was out driving about and this guy wanted to race me, so im like ok sure what the hell. So i rev up to about 2000 rpm, light changes and i go. I get it to just over 6k rpms in first and stick to second and after i got off the clutch and gave it gas i hear this very loud poping type sound. Now i know my tires tripped but this sounded like it was from under the body of the car. after that it didnt happen going into 3rd and it sounded fine normal shifting after that but thats the first time its happened to me. Reasons? or any idea what it was, I hope i didnt mess up my car lol.

Thanks

nope first time. Well first time when i had my music off and raced, but ive only raced 2 other times than that. didnt notice it before...

i donno what noise you are talking about, but it took me a while to get it perfect. right now i need a new clutch though, mine isn't as percise as it was when i first got my car.

That, my friend, is what we Mazda3 people like to call The Great Pounding

It is caused by a few different things but the root cause is soft engine mounts that allow metal-to-metal contact when over-stressed.

You only got a little taste of it but in your case, it was caused by a combination of torque load from the hard shift and a bit of wheel hop as you lost traction.

It sounds completely heinous but there's nothing we can do about it until somebody comes out with better mounts (urethane or something).

Better get used to it if you plan on beating on your car once in a while.

Oh, it happens over nasty potholes, too. (shrug)

is it possible to MAKE new bushings? cuz i HATE that noise.

Yeah... I've been contemplating that, too. I have no idea what the setup looks like, though. Once we get some honest warm weather, I'm going to crawl under and have a look at that and the shifter bushings. If I come up with anything before the aftermarket companies do, I'll post a message.

exactly what bushings are they? are they just motor mounts or what? also would u start with just a piece of eurethane? or would u use already made bushings and modify them as needed? (boom01)

Like I said, I have no idea what they look like... yet.

Yes, I would probably start with a hunk of urethane and start carving. Too difficult to find some "close enough" to be modified and would probably cost too much, anyway.

Details, details...

and urethane is harder than rubber and thats why they would be better???? (cheers)

'Zactly. I have a feeling these mounts are super soft. They did it to smooth the vibration at idle but I'd rather have a buzz than

The Great Pounding

(pissed)

So then its ok, i didnt break anything... yet?

Nope. You're fine.

I keep hoping something does break. At least then they might have some incentive to rectify the situation.

u can send out stock mounts to Energy Suspension and they can fill the mounts with Urethane...then hopefully u wont have that problem...but u will have a violent vibrating beast of a car... i know i have urethane mounts and its rough for awhile.. but sounds like it would be well worth it in your case...

Depending on what I find when I dig into it, that may be a viable option. Do you have a web site or something for them?
