Nintendo Wii Price and launch date revealed

Are you kidding me?? Sony will live on for at least 2 more consoles after the PS3 soley on name and reputation alone. Look how long Nintendo has lasted despite 2 complete bombs for their last 2 systems - they've survived on their reputation for years and Sony can easily do the same if need be.

The last 2 Nintendo systems were bombs? That's news to me. Explain to me why Nintendo is the richest video game company in the world, then?

Thats definately not prerendered. looks like real time to me. pee away!

just not on me.

The only saving grace for this Nintendo console may be its virtual console. Miyamoto recently said that he thinks most of today's games are too complicated for a lot of people and I think he's right - they need to get back to the basics and the best way to do that is to milk all of the classics from the old library as much as possible. The SNES was (and is) the greatest console ever made, so milking the SNES library is a very smart move.

There you go. What do you think is going to hurt Sony the most?

A lot of game developers don't even have kits for making PS3 games, how are they going to tap into that power packed chip that it is getting when developers can't even start making games for it?

I also heard that Sony is having problems manufacturing enough blueray lasers to go into all the PS3's it plans to sell at its launch. Which may cause a shortage in the amount of units available to buy.
I'm sure everyone remembers how big of a fiasco it was when the 360 was released and there weren't enough to go around. It sure looks like Sony is facing the same situation.

They purposely made a shortage of PS2 to get everyone hyped up and they try to release it too fast before they can even make enough to begin with (that's what I think). I got my PS2 from from Sony w/ 2 games before it was even released. Nice to know people sometimes. Too bad I left my employment LOL!

WII!!! Can't wait for Warioware! I want to see my friends making stupid expressions making sudden, irratic movements. Now THAT'S entertainment heh! I wonder how many people will break the controller in the first week hehe.

I know I want a PS3 no doubt in my mind but for 250 on a brand new kick ass console. s***, I'm sold

i couldnt find the info anywhere but does anyone know where the nes,n64,and snes are going to be stored to because to my knoledge there is no harddrive

I too was dissapointed in playing some PS2 games on my 50" Sony HD LCD. I thought composite cable would have looked better. In either case with the new DVD formats, I'll be purchasing a new game system that supports it. Most likely PS3 because of all my daughters games...hehe. Damn she's good.

It's the battle of BETA vs. VHS all over again!

There are? Got some proof? EA may be richer....and it depends on what you consider a "video game company"...technically if you consider Microsoft a video game company that would make THEM the richest and it wouldn't be because Microsoft is the best video game company. Same story for Nintendo. Like was already stated, their gameboy hardware and software are absolute cash cows for them and they ARE the reason they haven't gone the way of Sega already. There is no question that the N64 and the Gamecube were failures in comparison to the competing systems and Nintendo's own other hardware....so it's a simple business decision for Nintendo to cut the least successful pieces of their business. That is why the Nintendo head guy has already stated that if the Wii is not the success they are expecting it to be, it will be their last home console.

The whole thing is no different than the decision Sega made years ago. If you're getting beat in a certain area but excel in another, you concentrate on what you excel at to maximize your profit. That is what Nintendo will eventually do too - they make the best games of any company in the world but haven't been that successful with home consoles since the SNES, so their days of home consoles are close to done.

WRONG Nintendo I believe has still posted profits despite its last console bombing. One thing Nintendo does have going for it is the mobile game market. How many different versions of the gameboy have we seen? And each one is very good at what it is. They aren't surviving on their name alone...

Sony on the other hand has posted record LOSSES in its electronics department 4 out of the last 5 years. I know its not the playstations fault, but somewhere along the lines sony has lost focus on what the consumer wants.
Exactly - Nintendo is living on the profits of the gameboy and DS. So yeah they aren't surviving on their name in that arena, but they ARE surviving solely on their name in the home console arena.

Sony on the other hand may have posted a loss in their Electronics dept as a whole but it's not the Playstation's fault, as you've said. That's what I'm saying -- look at the specific areas we are talking about, home consoles. Sony has been very profitable in it, Nintendo not so much.

PS2 on my Samsung DLP TV looks aweful, i'd much rather not play PS2 then play it on an HD TV. I read that the wii isn't HD ready either, we'll have to wait and see how it looks.

Quote from Satoro Iwata's President of Nintendo: "The day Nintendo stops making consoles is the day they stop making games"

As long as Nintendo keeps making a profit on it's consoles (which it has on everyone except the Virtual Boy), they will be around for a long time to come.

Got some proof that they didin't, they made a profit on every gamecube, micorsoft has not even made a profit on xbox and it took ps2 2 years to make a profit off of PS2. N64 was not a failure sales were right up their with the PS1,

Nintendo said they would not make games if they can't make consoles.

BUT this whole fiasco is not helping Sony at all. BY trying sooo hard to outdo microsoft they've driven the price of the PS3 out of a lot of households. I paid 300 for my PS2 brand new, and that was a good chunk of change for me back in the day.

I see them digging a hole that is going to be very difficult to get themselves out of. I still say that if PS3 and blueray do not take off like they want, then Sony may have lost its final battle. It already lost the Betamax vs VHS, then it tried minidisc, then it made its own digital music format (Atrac) which also failed to gain hold. Oh and how many of us actually like having to use a sony memory stick, when you could get a more universal format like SD or Flash?

Nintendo will continue to sell well because of the price, and the fun factor in its games.

I just got an xbox360 about two weeks ago. I'm loving it. I will be getting a Wii, but i'll wait until after Xmas.

I have no interest in the PS3.

Why PS2 Succeeded, and Why PS3 Will Fail
The Sony PlayStation 2 had a lot of things going for it when it launched in October of 2000. It would launch more than a year before Nintendos GameCube console, a head start that proved to extend the lifespan of the console far longer than the usual five years. Normally, launching a game console outside of that five-year cycle spelled disaster (just ask Sega), Sony managed to make it work, but it wasnt by virtue of their games. The launch lineup for the PS2 was laughable, and would not improve for the majority of that first year. No, the PS2 sold for one reason and one reason only: including DVD movie playback cheaper than a dedicated DVD player.

At the time of the PS2 launch, a home DVD player retailed for about $399. Sony was selling the PS2 for $299, taking a significant loss on the hardware and expecting to make it up on software sales (often described as the standard game industry model, despite Nintendo not following that model themselves). For the first year, Sony was taking an absolute bath on the PS2 hardware, since the initial software selection was pitiful, yet the installed user base for the machine would pay dividends in the years to come, allowing Sony to secure many exclusives.

Not only was DVD playback a huge success for Sony and the PlayStation 2, but it was one of the factors that put DVD on the map, pushing hardware prices down and forcing many of the studios not convinced about the viability of the format to bow to consumer pressure. So it came as little surprise that Sony would announce years later that they would again release a game console featuring a new movie playback format at a price significantly less than the existing hardware. This time, however, Sony is the primary player for that movie format, and has a vested interest in its future. If lightning were to strike twice, Sony would come out as an unstoppable force.

However, while all the planets were aligned with Sony the first time around, six years later the outlook is not as positive. There are several factors at work against Sony, some they are powerless to control, and it is these same factors that will likely put Sony in a losing position.

  • No early mover advantage. Sony was the first out of the gate with PlayStation 2 (Sega launched Dreamcast between generations), but this time theyll have been beaten to market by Microsoft and Nintendo both.

  • Extremely expensive. While PlayStation 2 launched at a relatively high $299, it was still at a reasonable price point compared to other console launches. Microsoft was widely criticized for launching the Xbox 360 at $399, but Sony will double their own price point for the PS3 at $599. (Im intentionally ignoring lower priced configurations for crippled hardware.) No console selling for such a high price point has ever been a success in the marketplace.

  • Blu-Ray has competition. When DVD was released, there was no competing high-end video format. Blu-Ray was beaten to market by HD-DVD (by just about a month), eliminating the first-mover advantage in the video space. Blu-Ray has been criticized for poor video playback compared to HD DVD (though this may just be an early hardware issue), not to mention that HD DVD discs are less expensive to produce. It seems Sony hasnt learned much from their Betamax days. Regardless, if consumers bet on HD DVD over Blu-Ray, they could go running to Microsofts Xbox 360 instead of PS3. Its possible that some consumers might see BluRay and the PS3 as a whole as a future investment (a line of thought Sony is actively encouraging), but its an incredibly risky strategy.

  • PS3 requires significant additional investment. While its laudable for Sony to appeal to the videophiles and technologically adept, for either video games or high-definition movie playback, youll need a significant investment in display hardware youll need an HDTV. While Microsoft has touted their HD capabilities, movie playback and even gaming looks fine on regular TVs, and still superior to existing competition. For PlayStation 3, many of the features heavily emphasized by Sony (such as 1080p) require the use of HDTV to see additional benefit. BluRay looks no better than DVD on a standard definition TV, making that price tag even more painful to deal with when substitute products are available at significantly lower prices.

  • No wow factor. When PS2 was first shown to the public, the excitement was palpable. PS2 was such an obvious improvement graphically that it was a no-brainer where you would go for next-generation games. When PS3 was finally revealed at the last (and I mean last) E3, the general consensus was, Meh. Graphically, its difficult to tell the difference between PS3 and Xbox 360 graphics, and in some cases, it was stated that the Xbox 360 games looked better, as developers had a year head start to work around the system. Without some other compelling feature (such as the unique controller for Nintendos Wii console), gaming does not have a visual improvement on the PS3. Every gamer knows that graphics are not the end-all, be-all of games, but they are a major factor and one that is working against Sonys favor.

  • The loss of exclusives. Already, word is coming out that developers are hedging their bets and releasing what were supposed to be exclusive PS3 launch titles on Xbox 360 and/or Wii. Microsoft made significant waves at E3 when Peter Moore announced Grand Theft Auto 4 would be on Xbox 360 with episodic content (through Xbox Live). It seems that every month, more titles are added to the list of PlayStation 3 games that are cancelled, usually in favor of an Xbox 360 version.

  • No innovation. Another major criticism of Sonys E3 announcements were the apparent me too attitude, showing off a motion-sensitive controller in a cheap attempt to steal some thunder from Nintendos Wii (which went on to win Best in Show), and the revelation that they will have a similar system to Xbox Lives Achievements called Entitlements (apparently oblivious to the connotation that moniker elicits).

Sony is clearly behind the eight-ball, and its very tough to see why analysts are predicting Sony to be the winner in this console race. With a deck stacked so clearly against it, Sony is relying on backwards compatability and desirability to drive sales, seemingly oblivious to complaints about the price. While stranger things have happened, its highly unlikely that Sony will be able to fend off Xbox 360 and Wii without significant advantages that simply dont exist this generation. You know that the outlook is less than stellar when the editor of the Official PlayStation Magazine comes out on her blog to address these very same issues, stating that she wont be buying a PS3 of her own.
