Its always sad to see people die like this. I cant say preaching it is going to do much if not, anger some. Those kids had absolutely no driving experience. I do understand, it can happen to anyone but people who usually engage in spirited street driving practices do it with common sense most of the time.

The idiots that don't know when and where and the limits of their cars are destined to wipe out and probably kill someone. As long as there are cars on the road, there will be street racing.

But one thing int he article./ they use the smog deterint to ctch these guys and the cars put out 100 times pollution as a new car. Not always. i have seen cars with intakes test cleaner than a stock car. I have seen a chevy suburban with no cats and a supercharger run cleaner than new. and we have tested harleys to put out 20,000 times th epolution as an suv. They should call bikers illegal street racers also. and not every person with mods uses them wrong.


But we need mroe tracks. the need for faster stock cars and no wehre to use them dosent help. weith no place to go kids keep it on the street! we need them off!

I had 3 of my students wreck street racing after school last semester, and 4 more get tickets for it. I'm not going to get on a pedestal and pretend I didn't used to do it when I was younger, but always on empty roads and never in cities/neighborhoods. Now, not at all. Here's to hoping everyone on the boards stays safe, and even if you don't take part in street racing, stay alert for those that are. It's always more sad to hear about someone else's bad choices hurting those that made the right ones.

Call me cold hearted but I wouldnt shed a tear if the idiot driving was the one that got killed... what breaks my heart is it was an innocent mother and her two children 8 and 4 yrs old....
 
This is a tragedy, make no mistake, however it is unfortunate the drivers of the vehicles were so young and dumb. When I was that age I never raced my car; I had a new '92 Eclipse GSX at 16 and I was so intimidated by the speed I never really broke it in before a school bus ran a yield sign 5 months after I got in and ripped the front end off completely. Next car was a '94 TBird LX (the V8) and I have that car to this day, 74k miles and cherry condition. My Mazdaspeed3 is the first really high-performance vehicle I've owned that I am capable of driving within it's own and my own limitations. Coming from 10 years on my Thunderbird and everything I learned, I'm still finding the Mazda unbelievable simply because I'm so used to having an enormous engine pushing out just enough torque to swing my old cars big fat ass around turns with tires breaking tread. The limits I have are kind of muscle-memory imposed from those years in my TBird, and when I drive like that in the MS3 it's like granny-driving and I never break tread. LMAO. If I took curvy ramps at the speed I can in my MS3 in the Bird she'd have been in the wall, so I try to respect that demon at all times.

I'd like to say the lesson is parents shouldn't buy their kids anything that can remotely speed, not like the kid in my HS whose dad bought him a new 3000 GT VR4 sophomore year... But I did just fine with my turbo Eclipse, so I guess a performance-limiting option of some kind is in order?
 
This is a problem with parents. I knew when I was young that If I did this I would get my ass kicked. The morons nowadays get away with everything because their parents expect others the government to raise them. I don't even race like that now and I could if I wanted, ya know?

I know some people will deny it, but it's true for the general population.

While I agree with most of you, I don't think buying kids slower cars will stop them from racing. If I recall how I used to be, I probably would've tried to race even the Skoda Fabia which had 0-60 mph time of 18.4 seconds. (not sure what the 1/4 mile time is)

EVERYTHING is a revenue generator for police, that's why they spend more time on the shoulder of the highway than in the 'hood. That's how it is in Indianapolis; we have a big time crime problem. The answer a year back was to give our police automatic weapons, so now they're driving around with AKs in the trunk and STILL pulling over speeders. Additionally they just instituted a 3-tiered speeding violation system. I am unsure of the specifics, but the first offense is about $175, the second is about $400, and the third is something like $1200. I'm not talking about 'zone' tickets, or 'in a month', nor even in a year. These are 'on your record' speeding violations and there isn't a 'cut off' at a certain speed. If you get pulled over for 4 over the limit 3 times, that third one's going to hurt your mortgage and you'll be screwed.

I agree, this is an issue of parenting. The parents of these kids should be forced into some kind of program because, I'm sorry, but you are correct: if I did this s*** when I was that age my dad would have kicked my ass all over the state and I wouldn't have driven anything with a motor for 5 years. Hell, NOW if i did this s*** he'd kick my ass. I won't lie and say I don't pull some speed out of the demon at times, but I'm always really cautious of my surroundings and the situation and judge the level of risk. Typically, if there is risk BESIDES myself going very fast, such as heavy traffic, school zone, rain, whatever, I just don't speed. I turn off Ram Jam 'Black Betty' and find some Steve Perry on the radio.

in 18 months, Southern CA has had two drag strips close. Carlsbad in San Diego County and LACR in Palmdale. Although both tracks were a piece of s***, they still allowed weekend 1/4 draggin. Palmdale was even open during the weekdays at night which made for some real cool air in the winter time.

Open more tracks to curb the problem. In riverside and la county, which have had both race tracks closed, have the largest street racing problem. I dont see anyone doing anything to help this cause.

all we have in san diego county, is the 1/8 mile qualcomm track.
 
I guess we are lucky to have a few tracks that are within a 30 mins of each other for what ever kind of racing you want to do. Mesa Marin, (it was closed awhile back but i think they're building another one to replace it), Buttonwillow Raceway, and Famoso are all in a pretty close proximity to one another here. Also most people who want to race around here go out to one of the plentiful country roads where the only person they can hurt is themselves.
 
I'd be lying if I said I never street raced before... but when I USED to race, we did it right. We were out in the middle of nowhere after midnight and blocked off a straight stretch of road at both ends and there was nothing but smooth open fields on either side of the road. Oh, and you had to have your license for at least 2 yrs and wear your seat belt or you were outa the group or at least banned from racing with us. Yes it was still dangerous, but with no track closer than 2-3 hours, at least we did a decent job of trying to make it safer. And for the record, we had no incidents ever in that group

Never ever ever would we even entertain the idea of racing in traffic....
 
Yep the biggest problem is that the parents buy their kids or let their kids buy fast cars. I have seen 17 year olds driving M3s, S2000, STi, EVO's etc.

What parent in their right mind would let ANY 17 year old boy behind the wheel of a car like this?

Hell my wife wants to give our old 93 Ford Explorer to her 17 year of nephew and I wont let her. Not because its fast, but because the SUV turns on a dime and is very top heavy. My bet is that he will flip it in less than 6 months.

There is just no way any 17 year old boy is responsable enough to drive a performance car and I think the parents should be held just as liable for any death they cause.

Any 17 year old is going to test ANY car they have to see what it can do. Its just a fact of life. Its the parent who decides if its a 140hp civic or a 300 HP STi.
