Stupid question........but how did Mazda get involved with Ford in the first place ??

Mazda wasn't doing so hot several years back, so Ford agreed to buy about 33% of Mazda to help get their cars in the market, better.

Well, 33% is considered a controlling interest in Japan, and the rest, well the rest is what have today.
