Mazda Protege' 5 - 2003.5 - Silver - Auto
Hey, I'm Eric, I drive a 2003.5 silver MP5, and I'm new to the forum.. anyways, I'm a college student on a limited budget, and I was thinking about saving up some money to put into the car. My question is if it is worthed to even try to make this my MP5 a bit faster with intake, exhaust, etc... or should I just put all my money into upping the sound. I'm quite happy with the stock system, and I'd hate to lose the 6 CD changer if I went for a new head unit... but eh, what can ya do. I'd just like a few opinions before I waste my money like I usually do... thanks for the help

Get yourself a CAI or SRI, then maybe an exhaust. Simple and safe upgrades - you should see maybe 5HP, but the throttle response will keep you smiling.

welcome to the board. how much are you thinking of spending?

if you want to up the stock sound system, do what i am doing at the moment. get a david navone line converter (converts the speaker wires into RCA's) and then just run an amp and upgrade the speakers. simple, cheap, just as good as other options, but you keep the stock HU and the 6 disc changer.

first performance mods would have to be a cai or sri. you'd prob want to look into exhaust after that, but NOT before

welcome to the board

Get yourself a CAI or SRI first like everybody said. If you have more money to spend, get some exhaust or upgrade the suspension. I spent some much money on the sound and I regret it right now -> my opinion. I should get the turbo with all the money I have spent on the sound :'(

Welcome!

I would just keep the audio nice and simple awsome headunit and upgrade factory speakers, I don't know if I would recommend buying a turbokit for you since you have an auto and any turbokit will basically rip your tranny apart. My suggestion is to work on the exterior and interior then focus on some bolt-on performance and go N/A then if you want more power nitrous. Then throw some money down for suspension upgrades which will make the handling even better :D.

regarding the last statement----what difference does it make what order you do these two mods? just curious........(cheers)

Welcome!

Do whatever you want to your car. :) You have a car that is definately worth the time, money and effort. No less can be said about the little wagon that inspires us all. :)

Oh, and FWIW, the P5 is the perfect drunkwagon, if you are ever assign designated driver duties. ;) The most I fit in mine was 9 people. (lol2)

Thank for the info guys (and girls), I think I am gonna go with a simple intake / exhaust upgrade, then go on to sound... as for the suspension, I love the way the car handles, and I would give anything to go back and convince my dad to get a manual instead so I could autocross. Also, yes, drunkwagon is right.. I can't count the number of times I've hauled people home who'd passed out... and the number of times I've passed out and miraculously ended up at a friend's house... oh, and the ticket, I was blasting through a really really rich neighborhood (the ones where its just trees and dark, windy roads), and I got pulled over for going 75+ in a 35 zone.. along with running a stop sign and not signaling... the cop said that he had the whole thing on tape, and that he had been following me for 5 minutes.. if I had one more major violation, it would've been a felony.. PHEW.. thanks again everyone

sidpro5 - the reason i said cai first then exhaust is because an exhaust is wasted on an engine that cant breathe

Welcome to the club. But don't drive like an idiot, the P5 is a great car but you don't have to do "75+ in a 35 zone.. along with running a stop sign and not signaling" to have fun with it.

As for a turbo kit, you can safely install one into an auto P5 if you keep the boost under 8 psi. There are a few guys who have done this.

haha I was only driving that fast cause I hadn't been home in a few months, and I was anxious to get back to see my friends (it is the longest I've been away from home). I don't drive like that anymore... can't afford to get another ticket because my insurance will go up.

You guys would've been proud of the way my little wagon took those turns though, wish I could have a copy of that tape...
