Newbie MSP Performance Questions

How's it going? I just had my 02 Protege ES totalled and I am going to see if I have the money to pick up a MSP.

I want to get some extra power out of the car but don't want to risk a warranty violation. I have been reading many of the posts in here but am concerned about certain mods voiding the warranty.

I read somewhere that the stock MSP runs around a 7.00 sec 0-60. Basically, I would be happy with a 0-60 run around 6.5 sec (sorry, I don't know 1/4 mi times). I have an 02 Yamaha R6 so I'm not looking to totally mod out the car, just pick up some more mid-range acceleration.

So what simple, non-warranty voiding mods can be done (for cheap) that will take about a half sec off the 0-60 time of this car? I know that they have to prove it was the mod, but obviously, some mods will automatically void the warranty in their eyes...

Also, I want to keep boost stock because I bet they would void the warranty for messing with that. I'm thinking CAI and maybe an upgraded intercooler...

Sheesh! You gave him the Search button on his first post and no help whatsoever, girl!!!

The basics are the same for any car...Intake and exhaust will get you that half second. Up the boost 1-2 psi on top of that, and you'll be more than good. Although...if you're coming from a p5, you may find what the MSP has stock to be just fine.

I've looked through (searched) lots of post on here, but most are doing more than just a mod or two. I see most are doing those mods, plus upping boost, etc...

Like I say, I have a bike so I'm just looking for a small performance gain....

I'll read up more about it, but won't changing the factory boost void the warranty?

Also, now this is probably stupid, but are you talking about a new FULL exhaust or just swapping out the mufflers kind of deal?

Technically...yes. But what they don't know, won't hurt them.

Either way, the exhaust (full turbo back, hi-flow cat) and the intake should be mighty helpful, even w/o the boost boost. The flash does add some midrange power as well, so you'll see that in the 0-60 times.

If you haven't driven the car yet, go do so. You may find that it's just fine!

--EDIT-- when I do my exhaust I want to go full turbo back, hi-flow cat, and keep the muffler. I think that'll work...and should add plenty o' power if you want to keep the stock muffelhausen.

Use something like a JoeP MBC and remove it whenever you take it to a dealer

I don't personally see any point to just changing the mufflers - no power gains from that. If you're going to buy exhaust I'd vote for either a full turbo back or cat back exhaust.

In bike lingo: Which would be better, a full exhaust or a slip-on?
Do a complete exhaust and stay away from turning up the boost if you're worried about warranty. So, an intake and exhaust and you'll get a gain out of it. Probably a lot to be had with the exhaust end of things.

LITTLE BEAVIS-Actually in terms of bikes, some slip-on exhausts will get you about the same as a full system, amazingly....The biggest reason to get a full exhaust (other than sound and it breaths a tad better than a slip-on) is for weight reduction if you race or go to the track...For the street, it is smarter to buy a real quality slip-on instead of a full exhaust. I got what you are saying, though...

That is actually one of the reasons I asked that question...I wasn't too sure if there was that big of a difference as it appears to be...
