newbe - 1.5 down pipe to replace cat (1995)

I have had a protg for about 10+ Years now with 87K on the clock...

In recent years, I have had the following done.
New Struts, shocks, Timing belt, water pump, Fuel filter, Brake job (all 4) & flushed the system. Also a couple of axles to boot...

Last year I had to replace the Exhaust Manifold as it had a crack in it. Come to find out about 6 months later the exhaust pipe that connects to the exhaust manifold (1st catalytic converter) has a hole in it...

The dealer wants $606.00 to replace it, for a ten year old car I just looked at the service lady and asked her why would I do this? She did not know what to say...

To my question: has anyone bought one of the bosal pieces that replaces this pipe? Here is a link...

I have one on order, so will see if it works or not.

Thanks in advance...

Just an FYI - this only replaces the pipe after the cat that is attached to the exhaust manifold and not the entire unit.

My problem is the cat that is attached to the exhaust manifold - so I will have to go another route. This piece does seem to be better than the factory part as it is a little bigger.

Hope this helps someone else down the road...

I feel your pain man. Went through the same thing with my car. I just replaced the whole precat (what you're calling the cat after the exhaust manifold) with a mandrel bent piping w/ a bung installed for the O2 sensor. Custom job that was way cheaper than replacing the stupid precat.

I've searched and never found a pipe retail that would replace the stock precat. Your going to have yours custom made. But once you do that then your going to have a check engine light on until you make a MIL eliminator to fool the comp into thinking the precat is still there.

I've talked about this on clubprotege.com. Don't have the MIL eliminator finished and it's too cold outside for me to fiddle around with it now.

Let me know how this works out for ya, I bet that should flow pretty good. I was thinking of going this route and installing a high flow cat in place of the second cat. Probably a magnaflow carsound like I have used on previous cars. Then moving the 02 sensor downstream a little.

I just reread the thread and noticed my mistake. You are right Joesturbo.. That is just a pipe to replace after that cat to the mid pipe. I guess I won't goes this route afterall. I guess I may have to have my exhuast guy make something for me. I am sure he can come up with something for me. Fortunately the car has over 80,000 miles so he can legally mess with the cat for me.
