New Wheels!

Well, I have been driving a chevrolet blazer for the last 5 years and finally saved up and payed cash for a 2003.5 MSP with 50k miles on it.

There are little things like bumper bolts missing and need for new tires badly, but I got a good deal so who's complaining.

I took it for a test drive before I bought it and at WOT in almost any gear its like the engine shuts off for a half second and then starts back up at around 5k RPM
I also noticed it did it in 5th, at a lower rpm when I tried to pass a car on the highway.
I believe this is what is known as the fuel cut due to too much boost and can be fixed with the Flash at a mazda dealer. AM I CORRECT???? (the previous owner said thats what he thought it was and hadnt gotten the flash yet)

here she is!

She is sitting at my work right now (where the picture was taken) because she is waiting on tires, but mostly because I needed to bring my old car home.

no, it isnt fuel cut

its normal on all the msps

if it was fuel cut youd feel the whole car rock back and forth like you ran into something ;-)

the flashes don't cure it completely though, the SS AFC is the very best solution for it, if it is fuel cut that is

it does feel like I hit something, its a very violent motion
Will SS AFC still allow it to be daily drivable?
how much does it cost?
or should I just go get the flash?

depending on what version you get it can run you from 300 to almost 600 bucks i have Version 1 and im telling you right now it makes a night and day difference the install is super easy and if you have a brain you can install it. it also cleans up heistaion which will freaking drive you crazy if you dont have some type of ems for sure.

no the SS AFC wont fix that

if it is a very violent motion at around 5k at WOT then your wastegate is bad, common issue on these cars...just replace the wastegate and the issue will go away

the SS AFC is a very good investment though and youll see some good power gains from that, but it wont fix your problem....it will fix the hesitation issues that this car has though where it feels like its gutless between 4k-5200 rpms

Im going to take it into the nearest mazda dealer next saturday to get the flash, and see what they think it is.

depending on how many miles it has they may replace the wastegate, but thats a tough battle (Trust me, I tried)

in any case though, this issue IS 100% IN FACT FOR CERTAIN the wastegate

just replace it....ATP Turbo makes a direct replacement thats like 75 bucks thats better than OEM (which is like 320 bucks lol)

you cant say sitting here miles away from the car that you are 100% although it is a good assumption but it could be other things also ya never know. but if its really violent then the waste gate could be bad. my car would cut out at like 3.5 grand hard when i was getting fuel cut not in the 5's. a way to test the waste gate is to get a vac tester and unplug the line going to the waste gate if it holds vac then its good if it does not then its bad.

actually, Ive seen the issue enough to say that yes, it is the wastegate

theres only one other thing that could be causing it and that would be a hole in one of the pressure pipes after the maf sensor, in which case youd get a huge amount of fuel going into the engine to the point the car fuel cuts

its even easier to test the wastegate, no need to spend money on a vacuum tester...grab the vacuum line going to the wastegate and blow into the wastegate with it...if it isnt EXTREMELY hard to blow into it then its ******, you shouldnt be able to blow at all

trust me, Ive replaced 4 msps wastegates after they all have had this issue and it has resolved the issue on every one, the only one that continued to have the issue afterwards (but to a MUCH less extreme) was mine and I found a hole in one of my hardpipe couplers after the maf....replaced the coupler and the issue went away.

Ive seen it have the cutting issue at any range in the rpms from 3.5-6 (mine personally was 6)

if Im wrong, Ill paypal mook 10 bucks

lol waste gates go bad in these cars all the time so im not argueing but its not hard to change the WGA i did mine in like 15-20 min. we had a lift and done it under the car and btw if you change it your self watch out for the C clip we call them jesus clips at work cause when they come off only jesus knows where they land lol.

Screw the problem..I want to see what else is sitting in that garage?
Where do you work?

yea, these stock wastegates are bad...
you replaced yours in a half hour? damn thats pretty quick...usually takes me a little longer (mostly cause Ive always done it by myself), hardest part is getting the C clip back in heh

tip for mook: hook the shutter valve to the wastegate before you mount the wastegate....if your able to get the mounting bracket off that is, its kinda hard to get a wrench in there but its worth it in the long run cause that spring is pretty hard to extend to reach the shutter valve (sorry, blanking on the proper nomenclature for the shutter valve on the turbo...)

alright, ill check out that wastegate when i get a chance.
suggestions on the brand i should get? i want to run stock psi or close to it.

haha i knew someone would ask. I work at an independent Porsche repair shop in Houston, we do everything from repairs to build all out race cars.

get the ATP Turbo wastegate...its 7psi, stock is 6....1 psi wont make any difference, our rods are good up to 10psi

Ill see if I can find the link for ya

its also the cheapest, 70ish bucks where as the forge is 150 and the OEM is like 230 or 320 (cant remember)

omg when we bought our first one we were like omg this will pay for its self just cause it will make the mechanics times drasticly decrease so we got one more they are amazing.

so its not actually the wastegate itself that is bad, its the diaphragm in the actuator that goes bad? if the diaphragm is bad wouldnt it just not purge and continue to build boost? could someone explain to me exactly what the car is doing when it hesitates like this?

You usually get what you pay for is the actuator from ATP a piece or is it reliable?

will this one work for an 03.5
http://www.atpturbo.com/Merchant2/m...D&Product_Code=ATP-WGT-019&Category_Code=VMSP
or will that z bend not work for my car? if so i think ill go ahead and do that now.

I think I am still going to get the flash it cant hurt anything.

lots of questions thanks for the help for a mazdaspeed n00b!

on a side note, I got to take the car out and show the girlfriend tonight. AND I LOVE THIS CAR!!!!! I have never been able to take a turn onto a side street and not hit the brakes before, this car drives on rails, my tires are bald as hell and they dont even squeel a bit on the turns.
I was sitting at a light waiting for the left hand turn and a P5 with an older guy pulled up, his light went green and he was so busy looking at my car that he missed the light completely! hahaha
