New TSB for front rotors

I took my 5 to the dealer to have the brakes looked at yet again due to judder/vibration. Turns out that there is a new TSB (04-003/11) to remedy this. The rotors are new updated design as described in my receipt. This was replaced under warranty.

Here's the first part of it:
Bulletin No: 04-003/11

Last Issued: 03/23/2011

Subject: FRONT BRAKE JUDDER

APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
2007-2011 Mazda3 vehicles (except Mazdaspeed3) with VINS lower than JM1BL******444805 (produced before January 6, 2011)
2008-2012 Mazda5 vehicles with VINS lower than JM1CW******107306 (produced before January 6, 2011)

DESCRIPTION
Some vehicles may exhibit a vibration in the steering wheel or the vehicle body when the brakes are applied. This is caused by uneven wear on the disc plate, depending on how the brakes are applied. To correct the problem, the production process of the disc plate has been changed.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following repair procedure...

Aw damn... wish I had seen this when I bought my 09 5 back in April this year. I get pretty severe brake vibration now, but I'm out of warranty. :(

TSBs and recalls don't just apply to vehicles under warranty.
Oh, that's the way I read it:

This warranty information applies only to verified customer complaints on vehicles eligible for warranty repair.
This repair will be covered under Mazda's New Vehicle Limited Warranty term.
Additional diagnostic time cannot be claimed for this repair.

There are two parts to the TSB. The "Warranty Information" section has special rules in the event that the vehicle is under warranty.

My question on the TSB itself is this: how long is it good for? Surely this doesn't mean "one free front rotor replacement, no matter how much time has passed and how many miles you have".

TSB are just bulletins released by the automaker to address issues that have been brought up many times. The TSB will apply only if the concern is duplicated on your vehicle and will only be FREE of charge if your vehicle is within the warranty period. Otherwise the repair can still be done but a the owners expense.

Maybe there are different scenarios for TSB repairs outside of warranty. I don't know. I do know my '92 MX3 had repairs made in '04 that were from a TSB and the car had over 200,000 miles on it. I guess it's the dealer's choice or something.

TSB sometimes come along with Safety Recalls. If it is a safety recall that has not been performed then the dealer must perform the recall/TSB per requirements of the automaker because it poses a safety hazard no matter mileage. The only exception to this rule that I know of is if the vehicle has a "SALVAGE" tittle at which point neither a TSB or a recall would be performed free of charge.

I've got a 2009 Mazda 5 for which I just finished paying >$600 for new front pads and rotors this morning after I was getting pulsating brakes for the last few months. I knew it was warped rotors, but put the repair off until now. Now I see this TSB.

My VIN begins with JM1CR, not JM1CW as stated in the TSB. Anyone know the significance of the fifth VIN code letter? Doesn't seem to be any resources on the internet for decoding the Mazda5 VINs. I'd like to get my ducks in a row before I call up the dealer and tear a strip off of them for a repair which should've been partially covered under the TSB/warranty.

Hmmm that's odd. I was under the impression that out MZ5 were chassis code CR1. I've never seen a CW1 code. I am almost positive that your 2009 is part of this TSB. If in warranty, Mazda will refund you after you submit proof of repair call them up.

I actually just got off the phone with the warranty manager at the dealer. He initially told me that the rotors were a wear item, and that they wouldn't be covered under the warranty past 12 months. He didn't relent when I told him there was no exclusion in the warranty manual. Then, I pointed out the TSB...which he didn't seem to know about. He called it up on the computer and wasn't entirely sure as to whether it applied to my vehicle or not (!). Then he said he would cover the cost of the rotors plus one half of the cost of the labour, and I would pay the cost of the pads and the other half of the labour. I said why am I paying any of the labour when the pads have to come off to get at the rotors. He said the old pads were worn, so I should be paying half the cost of the labour as they'd have to take apart the calipers to lube the sliders, etc. I'm not seeing anything on my invoice about brake servicing, other than the repair...

What's a guy got to do to get an honest repair job done? I don't mind paying for non-covered repairs, but geez...

Most Mazda USA TSBs are not applicable in Canada. You can attempt to raise a stink, I have.

Live (almost) update on "new" TSB-reccomended rotors from Mazda dealer

All,

I also argued a few points and got nowhere but all is not completely lost - here's the story for me:

1) 2009 Mazda5, currently with about 51,000 miles on it.
2) Car brought back under warranty at 25,000 to have the rotors machined due to judder issue.
3) Judder started coming back about 4-5,000 miles ago.
4) Was ready to upgrade to MS3 front calipers, rotors and pads (may still do it) as they are 320 mm as opposed to stock at 300 mm (also the same as the Euro Focus ST and Volvo S40 T5 ONLY with a manual transmission). Even have a post here still looking for calipers once MS3's start getting parted out here.
5) Brought car back last week to finally have the power steering recall taken care of (of course no mention of the TSB from the dealer)
6) Found out about the TSB here yesterday.
7) Called dealer today - they confirmed that a) the TSB and "free" rotors only applied to vehicles still under original warranty and b) even though I specifically had warranty work done at 25,000 miles, that this effort would only be covered by an additional 1 year /12,000 miles. Plus they would need to verify if I had the issue or not before they would schedule a visit. The dealer is 30 minutes away, my wife cannot do without the vehicle and my schedule is a mess. So I had an idea given that I had the day off and that the dealer happened to be open.
8) I called back. "Mazda Parts please. Do you have a pair of rotors - part number, C26Y-33-25XC from this:

0400311_01.gif

9) "Yes we have 2, in fact." $94 each.
10) "Sympathy for those of us that are being hit with the TSB out of warranty?"
11) "Sure - I can sell them to you for $83 each." Note: Local O'Reilley's has good Bosch aftermarket ones for $93 each - weird, plus they had to be ordered.
12) "I'll be there in 30 minutes."
13) By 5pm the new rotors were on the car and no more judder. Pads at 51k miles are about 1/2 done. I'll get around to that in my copious free time.

Bottom line, for peace of mind, and not having to schedule around the inconvenience of my dealer, the $165 or so I spent was just fine.

If everyone is more patient than I and want to save even more, and if you are certain these are the real Mazda parts, go here:

http://www.oemmazdaparts.com/C26Y-33-25XC

As of this writing they were available for $59 + $10 shipping.

At those prices I think I'll still jump and upgrade to MS3 parts... but I guess I'll talk to the dealers in my area first.

My Mazda5 VIN does not match to VIN stated in this TSB, but week ago my front rotors was replaced on Mazda expenses ($0). So, if you will complain (and "raise a stink" is important part here!) - they will do it, if not - they will save money on you :)

As I always say..."the squeaky wheel gets the grease"

My '08 now has 155,000km on it now. I'm not hard on the brakes at all and I have wobble when braking now. I called Saskatoon Mazda and they said there was no service bulliten for my car. Typical :(

I drove 216,000km on my '03 corolla before I needed to replace the front pads. No warpage. Didn't even need to replace the rear pads. I kept that car for over 300,000km. I know I'm not hard on brakes, but the Mazda doesn't seem to be build from the same quality of parts as Toyota used :(

The stealership wants to charge $75-$100 per rotor plus their exorbident labour. My local shop can get them for $50 per rortor and his labour is a lot less.

I know I'm not going back to the stealership . . . ever!
