New to the rotary

just another quick question, I was wondering about if we can run nitrous in the rotary engines, cause I was look at a dry shot with wot. Any suggestions?

N2O can be done... but dry shot is no bueno.

why is dry shot no good? Would any of you guys put nitrous in your cars? Cause if you don't recomend it I wouldn't put it on, Iwould invest the money else where.

dry shot can create a lean condition when using enough N2O to make it fun, under certain circumstances... and detonation related to that is bad.

wet shot, on the other hand, could be a lot of fun, and makes sure you have the proper fuel mixture.

tho w/the rotary, you can get more power for your effort w/street or bridge porting w/out having to run lines or setup switches to work only at WOT or worry about finding a place to put a bottle... and without having to refill the bottle. You've already got to fill the gas tank, and watch your oil levels as it is.

I"m having a problem starting my rx-8, called mazda they said I need a flood drain for $100, that sounds weird to me I know you can't start and then stop the rotary engines because of flooding but I have done it other times, Like going to the store which is like 5 sec from my house and then back but it always starts right up the next time, it sounds like it wants to start it just wont roll over?

yeah I did that and I waited all day cause I tried when I was leaving for work @ 6:30 this morning, then got home from work and tried still no good.

Unless something has changed with the RX8 engine, the flooding is the least of your worries.

Rotaries need a slow warm up and cool down cycle because of the different metals used in the engine. Different metals expand and contract at different rates.

If you start your rotary and floor it down the street cold, you will kill it in short order, warping components and stripping bolts. All rotary owners I know let their cars idle for at least 4 minutes before they move the car. My Cosmo (which is a 20B-REW) does not get moved for 4 to 10 minutes depending on how long it has not been driven for and how cold the environment is. The engine is also not pushed past 2000rpm until normal operating temps are reached. Which also mean no boost until warm. Sometimes (in summer for example) 4 minutes of idle and the engine is ready to go. In winter however it takes longer.

If the engine is still warm, then an idle for a minute or so is fine. The time it takes to put your seat belt on and turn the stereo on. That is IF the engine is already at normal operating temps.

Low octane fuel is best avoided for a few reasons. Normally the higher octane fuels are better quality with less crud in them. The Cosmo runs 98 or 100 octane fuel. Granted a turbo system is more sensitive to lean outs. If there is detonation in a rotary that normally = dead engine. The RX8 being new should have lots of fancy electronic equipment to limit that sort of thing happening, like making sure there is always enough fuel to not have that happen.

Never use synthetic engine oil in a rotary. most synthetics (as far as I know) are designed to not burn. Which is exactly what needs to happen in a rotary. So normal good quality oil is what you need to use.

As for more power, if you don't or can't afford top quality fuel then there is no point in increasing your engine power output. Porting the engine will result in more fuel consumption. Turbos will also result in more fuel consumption. The rotary engine also does not have cam shafts, conventional valves or lifters. All the engine upgrade parts you might see for a conventional engine won't be of any use for a rotary.

The best power upgrade you can get is a more free flowing exhaust. High flow cat and a straight through muffler. More power in a rotary almost always means more noise. The modern O2 sensors in the RX8 should be able to handle this.

Have a look through utube for rotary cars, like the RX7 or RX3, that will give you an idea on what a street port or bridge port with a free flowing exhaust will sound like.

Also if my Cosmo does not want to start, as in the engine is turning over but it is not starting I floor it. that starts it every time. If it is a 5 minute walk to the shops, I walk. Its better for my car that way :)

thanks thats alot of great info. I really don't know much abiout rotary engines but I love the car. So thanks for the info, got a call from my garage and they said it was just flooded and needed new plugs. And again thanks for the info.
