New (to me) car... What to buy???

Hey you two (titanium/Martispeed), you might have met at one of the fun runs and not know it... I think Martispeed blew his motor or did some major damage on the first fun run I was on... Was that you?

Yea, that was me sad to say (I spun a rod bearing).... I dont think Titanium 8 was there at that one tho.

@ titanium 8 Yea I am a member over there and have been for 6 months or so. I have been reading on and on and on haha almost every day at work. There is alot of great info there. I think I almost know tooo much and that is whats bothering me about getting an 8 hahaha

I don't know how many miles you put on a car but RX8s are expensive to feed. At 13-15mpg, you're not going to be inspired to drive very far or very often, especially if you want it to be a daily driver. An MSM should get at least 25-30mpg, I'd think.

Yea thats another point, I have read about people getting around 18mpg with mostly highway but like you said the mpg in the mid-teens is quite common.

Definitely not the most fuel efficient choice, that's for sure. I daily drove mine April to Nov. About 50 miles per day. I put on 10,000 miles this summer. I averaged 18-20 mixed driving. Not so god aweful really. Plenty trucks out there getting worse.

LoL... that you have to compare it to a truck to make it seem better is saying a lot.

I put 80 miles a day on my car, just driving to work and back. 18mpg would kill me.

Overall average for the past five years (almost six) is about 29mpg. The CAI helped immensely. I get 32-34 in the summer and 27-29 in the winter.

I've heard (not sure how true this is) but the first run of RX-8's had problems, and they slowly worked the kinks out over the duration. You definitely want to skip out on the first year or two and look for a certified one if you're really set on one.

If you don't mind me asking, what's your budget? That might really help get more recommendations your way.

Well in the mid teens is what I'm shooting for so around 15 or so if I found a good deal for less I would obviously go for it.

Yea the MS6 is one of the other cars I have been looking at. As for the MS3 I truly want an RWD or AWD im kinda sick of FWD haha.

I mean I love the MS6 and since im on here almost everyday reading (sad I know) I know alot about them.

Whats weird is that with my current insurance provider, all of these cars quote about the same...

My ins. went down with the MS6 actually. I only pay $810 a year right now for full coverage.

I just can't see having an 8 as a DD. There's a lot of responsibility and care that comes with one. The MSM is nice, but I wouldn't own one unless it was a track queen. Also, they've got potential, but are still slacking quite a bit from the factory.

Well what do you think makes the 8 not so great for a dd. I just want to see what your opinions are. Not trying to argue hahA sometimes these questions sound like that...

Well, the oil consumption and the finicky nature of the rotary are enough for me to not want one as a DD. The handling and overall dynamics of the car are awesome, but it just seems like something you'd spend as much time wrenching on as driving.

Yea you’re right about the finicky nature. I mean the list of more then usual maintenance includes adding oil, changing plugs/coils every 25k, possible premix of fuel, visors falling apart, and probably other things im forgetting.

Really, the oil thing is not a big deal. I use an extra quart of oil between changes. So, being the 8 uses natural oil, you're talking maybe $3 every couple months. The spark plugs are the bigger issue. Buggers are friggin' expensive at $20 a piece. Guys at Advance Auto did a double take on that one. I'm about to drop $120 or so on coils over the winter. Not sure I need them, but I'm at 40K on the originals, so I figure I might as well while she's up for the season. Kind of seems like a lot, but being I won't do it for another 3 or 4 years, it averages out pretty low per year.

Sometimes I think the 8 gets a bad rap for being expensive to upkeep. This past year, I probably only spent a couple hundred on normal maintenance stuff (brake pads, one rotor, 2 plugs-dealer replaced two for free, oil and an air filter). Perhaps I've just gotten lucky with mine, knock on wood.

The MS6 is a really nice ride. I was really impressed with how Steve's pulled. It's probably a better DD. Not sure what kind of milage it gets, but it's most likely better than the 8 will do. As far as insurance, I'm thinking I need to look around more. I've got a perfect record and am paying a little over 600/6 mo for full coverage. That was as cheap as I could find. What company do you go through, Steve? I have to go with one that classifies the 8 as a 4 door sedan, really cuts the cost.

I guess it all comes down to just drive what makes you smile. I'd rather pay a little more and be happy than be second guessing myself.

Well I know you asked Setve but I got my quotes through Geico and I think they were some where around that... you have to remember that location has alot to do with the price of insurance.

Definitely. For me in Wayne Co., it's not bad. I got a lot of little discounts though which helped.

I still maintain that an 8 for a toy/summer car would be alright, but a true replacement for the MP3 that would be better would be the MS6.
