New Tires

I'm in desperate need on new tires and I don't know which ones I want to purchase. Right now I'm running Kumho Ecstas ASX. I like them but I've never had any other tires on my MSP. What I'm looking for in the tire is great traction wet/dry, good cornering, long lasting, low road noise and descently priced. Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance

personally, it sounds like you want to have your cake and eat it too. IMHO, you'll have to sacrifice at least one thing on your list. from what i've read, General Exclaim UHP's are the tire for you.... but i have no personal experience with them...

A tire that has all those qualities will not be long lasting. Unless you tell us what is long lasting for you. And what you are planning to pay per tire.

I have drive around on old Toyos T1-S and I use Bridgestone RE-01R for autocrossing. I also buy most of my tires used. Helps with the budget.

i drove around the year on falken rt-615 on the p5 and bought them again for the evo. then again its summer all the time here lol

honestly these tires are great on dry, and ok in rain, but why would you be speeding in the rain anyways?

The Kumho's I have right now, the front lasted two years and the rear have been on there since I bought the car in July of '05. I want tires that last at least that long, I don't do autocross or anything like that. I'm trying to stay around $100 per tire.

I won't be speeding in the rain. The roads around here just let the water lay on the road. Even driving 30mph in some spots it gets a little wicked. Northwestern Pennsylvania roads suck!

if long life is the case then these tires are not for you they last about a year. (falkens)

toyo proxes 4? had them too, pretty good all around tire.

After searching around, it seems the General Tire Altimax HP seems to be the best bet. They're cheap and have excellent ratings(at least on paper). Is anybody running these?

i'm in western PA and i'm running the 615's.... granted i didn't buy them for their tread-life and i have a set of winter wheels, but i love them. they're not too hot in the rain, but if you're civil about driving in the rain, you're ok. but boy, when it's dry and they're warm..... sticks like no other.

my other choice when i was shopping was BFG g-Force sport's. same price range and almost double the treadwear rating. that's probably what i'll get next.... even though i hate directional tires....

i just ordered 4 brand new kuhmo ecsta ast...did yours work well for u? or should i regret that i bought those?

I like my Ecsta ASX's. They handle great, I never lose traction when its dry out. When its wet they are ok unless the water is laying on the road. I never had the AST's so I can't say anything good/bad about them. I do know that the ASX is an ultra-high performance tire and the AST is a high performance tire. If the AST's are anything like the ASX's, you won't regret it. Sorry I can't be more help.

the ast's are an h-rated tire. dont do too well for performance driving

avoid cheap tires. they are cheap for a reason. I love the BFG Gforce sports. on my 2nd set, got 40k on my 1st set. KEEP THEM ROTATED EVERY 5000 MILES!

i had my yokohama's ES-100 on for 6000 miles.

they stick like glue on dry hot tarmac, they dont squeel, and they tend to let the rerar of the car go in extreme limit of hanlding in a curve.. they "warn" me that there to there limit before i spin around..

nice tires and all.. very slippery in the wet, and the front ones have 25% left of thread life.. i dont make them spin for fun but when i take off hard they do tend to spin a little.

the next ones won't be as extreme as this..

Tire Rack advises that while they are technically an M+S tire to not run them in the snow or even in conditions below 40 degrees. I have a different set of wheels/tires for winter.

im thinking about getting the mazda 16" 5 spoke aluminum rims from the mp5 as a spare set. do u know if those would be a direct fit for the msp

Goodyear Eagle F1s in the stock size for me.
In the end, it came down to a great tire for all year 'round. Winters here can be a b**** one day and then great the next... I needed predictability for the unpredictable.
I ended up finding mine for 137 a tire at Sam's Club (of all places). I did a lot of research before finally getting mine and they've lasted quite a while (haven't rotated them yet, although I probably should) they've still got massive amounts of tread.
