A couple of weeks ago..I was coming to a stop and when I started to push in the clutch it started pulsing violently against the bottom of my foot....My first thought was something broke it the clutch....coasted in a parking lot and figured out that with the clutch all of the way in or all of the way out there was no pulsing and the clutch worked normally...so I drove about a mile back home.....called roadside assistance and towed it to the dealership.
They diagnosed it as the clutch...replaced it...It did not fix the problem...they called and told me it was a bent input shaft in the tranny and that it was caused by abuse and Mazda might not cover....ridiculous...I was coasting to a stop when it happened!!!! They(dealer) told me they were waiting for a call back from mazda...the very next day they call and tell me that Mazda(field engineer) diagnosed it as a bent or broken rod and they are putting a shortblock in it.....sounds crazy to me.....anybody have any thoughts on this?.....Ive never had a problem with the engine.......it ran fine???!!

many times, the cause of the blown engine/damage is not done when it blows, but instead before. You may not have been abusing it when the pulsing started, but abuse before that instead.

Is putting in a short block normal or do they usually change the whole engine??By the way i have more info from the dealer now..they say at tdc the #4 cylinder is .733" short compared to the others....they say it is due to an injector leaking down...not abuse(now)...mazda is going to cover...I had the car in to the dealer a couple of weeks before this happened for backfiring "loud" between shifts ....they couldnt reproduce the prob...and said it could be normal....Im not sure if this could be related or not?

sounds normal to me. If the heads are ok, there is no need to replace them.

tsk, man!!! thought i'm problem-free with this car but something keeps popping up! i'll cross my fingers and thanks for the info.

thats ok mine launched a rod out of the block at 5177 miles on it. had just shifted to second 2k rpm. was in my neighboorhood luckily. ended up have to get a whole new motor.

to op, did you have any mods when you brought in the car?

I think i have the same problem, i get pulsating when lightly on the clutch and once i press it in, the noise goes away. The pulsating came after random misfires happen.

i brought it in yesterday, and the dealer insisted it was a clutch issue and if a mazda rep comes and look it at and there was no problem or they refuse the claim i would be charged $700+, what bs. They kept saying that mazda will most likely refuse the claim cause i had some mounts ...

Its weird too, i would think if it was a bent rod, that the noise and vibration would still be there even if the clutch is pushed in?
