New oil thread to clear the confusion...

2007 Mazdaspeed3
I just bought a Mazdaspeed3. The dealer has scheduled a 3mo./3,000 first oil change with synthetic being an option if I pay the difference.

A. Should I change the oil before then? If so, to what? What's the best synthetic and what is the best weight for that brand for the Mazdaspeed3? This car will VERY OCCASIONALLY be driven in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in winter where temps routinely hit 0 degrees Fahrenheit. I have NOT babied the car as I've often been told to drive it as you would normally after the first 20-100 miles as that is when the ring seating takes place.

B. Filter recommendations? Does the Mazdaspeed3 use a special filter?

C. Where should I get the oil changed? I'm 100% NOT interested in doing it myself.

Thank you in advance!

Well,

The way I understand it (after I talked to my service Dept.) is to at least wait until 1k or 1.5k miles before I change the oil (I am not waiting past 1k) and that the Filter is just a regular Mazda Filter (the part number is OIL-321-14-302-9U which is used for most mazda cars). As far as what to change it to - synthetic or dyno turd - I have not decided yet myself. It will perform better with synthetic oil, however, if its not fully broken in - the synthetic oil will be to slippery and may actually hurt the removal of the excess parts that need to come out. I may change my oil to dyno turd at 1k/1.5k and then change it again at 3k to synthetic to make absolutely sure it is broken in.

The reason why I want to change it as early as possible is to get all the metal crap out that the filter didnt catch. Chances are there may still be some junk left to get rid of.

Thats my reasoning anyway.

Did either of you take a longer warranty? And if so which one and why?

Thanks,
John
'No' on the longer warrantee - I don't really believe in them. Besides, why extend the amount of time before I can modify my car?

I'm inclined to take mine to the dealer at 2.5-3K and have them keep putting in the Mazda semi-synth, which I assume it came with just like the MS6. I'll have the dealer change it again at 5K and then every 5k after that until the warranty expires. This is conservative, but if there's a problem, I don't want the hassle of providing my records. It's worth the extra $30-40 per oil change to me. After the warranty expires I might climb under there myself and do the changes. Then again, maybe not depending on how busy I am. WARNING: DEALERS CAN AND WILL SCREW UP OIL CHANGES. ALWAYS POP THE HOOD AND CHECK THE OIL YOURSELF BEFORE YOU DRIVE OFF. THEN IF THEY SCREWED UP, THERE IS NO WAY THEY CAN BLAME THEIR SCREW UP ON YOU. It has happened to me and million of others, and it is probably happening somewhere on the planet right now.

As far as driving in the cold, the manual says 5W30 for temps as -20F. So, you should be fine at 0F.

Ok so from what all I have read I will get my first oil change at 1000 miles and then the next at 3000 and then after that around 5000 and totally switch to syn oil. I think that is what I am gonna do. Any thoughts?

There's this rumour about "special additives" in the oil the car came with to help with the break in process. I read a post on another thread from a Honda/Acura tech stating that Honda issued a TSB "threatening to void the warranty if a car owner changed the oil before 3K": http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=73230&page=3. I don't know if it's really a factor or not, but I do know that the engine will likely last a good long time even if I wait until 3K for the first oil change. On the full synth, I keep waivering back and forth b/c that turbo does get really freaking hot. Factor in the summer time ambient temps in TX and maybe it really will make a difference in the long term.

Oh, hey, sorry. I forgot that the idea was to CLEAR up the confusion, not create more. Does that every really happen on these forums?

(rofl) hahaha clear up confusion? why would you want to do that??

seriously tho, I was talking to my dad about this last night (let him drive it too...) He said that it would probably be OK to wait until 3000 and that he has never heard of people changing the oil sooner on the new car. Ive heard or ppl doing this, but it doesnt seem all that practical unless ur realllly beating the crap out of the car. I just crossed 1000 miles last night, i plan on waiting at least 1000 more before changing it. Also, not sure on the synthetic vs. blend debate. I will probably go full synth b/c the weather here fluctuates a lot and i do tend to drive hard..

- I dont think that ever happens on ANY forums on the net!

Yeah I never heard of changing the oil soo soon, but then again I have never owned a new car! Yeah I am still on the line about full/blend syn. I guess I will talk to the dealer a little and see what they say. Also I'll ask around too. On a side note, Is it just me or is anyone else with a new car really paranoid like when you wake up and go look at your car, there is a huge scratch on it. Especially tonight since it is mischief night.....HA
