2003 Mazda Protege5
Hello all! I have just become the proud owner of a 2003 Protege5 (Midnight Blue Mica) and a member of the site. I paid $6,500 with only 104,000 miles and fully loaded, leather, ABS and all. Is that a good price? Anyway, I have spent a while searching the forum for things that I should be looking out for when buying a P5. I found this thread: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/show...ning-to-buy-a-Protege5-What-should-I-look-for
I have read other places about the problem with the screws in the butterfly valves coming loose and being sucked into the engine. I read about the recall for this and my P5 is not within the VIN# range therefore not included in the recall. Sport23 said to pull the intake manifold to see if the butterflies were installed with screws or rivets. Before I do that, I wanted to ask what to do if I discover that the butterflies are installed using screws? Would it just be better to order a new intake manifold? Wouldn't a new one from the dealer be the (redesigned) one with rivets? I tried to find an intake manifold thru Google but I only found one here: http://www.srmotorsports.com/Mazda_Protege_Performance_Intake_Parts.html
Thats alot of money. Do you guys know any other sites for parts or where I can find it cheaper? Or just answer my main question: What should I do if I discover that the butterflies in the intake manifold are fastened using screws instead of rivets? Thanks for the help in advance!

The 626 manifold is a replacement/ 505's intake manifold but you lose the EGR.......... Both have No butterfly valves :)

Thanks for the quick replies. I read in here that the 626 manifold would work too but that I would loose VICS if I used it. Also would it throw a CEL if I removed the butterflies? How would it affect power/mpg? This will be my daily driver. And I live in LA so the car has to pass smog. And what is a 505?

505 is a custom intake mani for our cars.. exspensive but good gains from what I understand. As far as you not having a CEL... It really depend on if you hook everything back up properly like it was. And gas mileage I have no idea if it has any affect on that as all... I havent done it.

Ok so I guess I'll just remove the manifold and if I have screws then I'll remove the butterflies. I'm not ready to do any serious modding to it yet. Just tint and maybe repolish my wheels when I get my tax return. I just wanted to know what I could do about my intake just in case or before something bad happens. My daughter's first birthday is coming up so I need to have some cash left over for a party that the wife wants to throw. Last question: Did Mazda even make a revised intake manifold where the butterflies are riveted in place? If so then I will just order that. I don't want to lose VICS.

Intake manifold-Question not answered

Does anyone know if Mazda ever made a revised intake manifold with rivets to replace the one with screws. Just asking since they replace the Prtege5 with the 3 in 2004.
