Steve Jobs, CEO of apple just announced the release date of the NEW apple iPhone 3G is set for July 11th 2008 at an astonishing price of $199.99 for the 8GB and $299.99 for the 16GB.

i might pick one up since i broke my at&t tilt a little while ago and they let you sign up for the iPhone regardless of contract. price is much better than it was last year and they added some of the features the first gen was lacking though it's still missing a few things.

didn't they just greatly reduce the market for their ipod touch by doing this? the touch is more expensive and has less functionality

maybe a price reduction is coming and/or 64gb model.

july 11, can't wait to get rid of my phone, and replace my 5 year old ipod at the same time.

I really don't see the iPhone as a replacement for an iPod.

I see the iPhone being used for a playlist that has been put together with about 60 maybe 80 songs.

i might pick one up too. i've been stuck with a phone without a backlight for like a month. it's pretty annoying. sell my zune, sell my broken LCD tilt, either keep my E62 or get my 6230 working to keep as a mountain biking phone so i don't break the iphone then sell whichever i don't keep, and it should hopefully not cost much at all for the iphone

true, it does have 16gb which is pretty decent but it's probably more of a revolving media store than a warehouse like an HD player. on the other hand the only things that i've listened to in a long time on my 30gb zune are the GH soundtracks so 60-80 songs would probably be pretty good for me

I'd rather have an 80 gig ipod and my free verizon phone.

That way I wouldn't be subject to AT&T's garbage coverage around my area.

I plan on getting one :) My contract with Sprint has been up since April and I was looking into switching to AT&T anyway. I was going to buy either a Blackberry Curve or a Blackjack but I think I'll wait for the iPhone.

I'd take AT&T over sprint any day.. I rejoiced when my sprint contract expired in october '07.

Yeah... I can't wait. They were ranked 2nd in Worst Customer service by MSN (I think)... I believe it.

Last year yeah..

The updated rankings were 1. AOL 2. Comcast. I know sprint was in the top 10.

I never had a problem with sprint customer service, I had a problem with their coverage area. Their coverage was AWFUL where I live.

I'm sure you know my feelings on comcast based on my signature.

yeah comcast blows - at the end of 1 year contract, they suddenly upped our charges from $135/month to $250/month. Sadly verizon fios is not in my area yet so im stuck with it.

as for the iphone, I think i'll keep my BB for now, my fingers are too fat for the iphone touch screen keyboard (especially after a few pints)

NEver had a problem with sprint and my LG Musiq phone gets great coverage. I use my 30 GB zune for everything else. Here's hoping microsoft keeps the updates for the zune coming (the last update was great). I'm hoping they add games, navigation, and a couple of other tools and I'll be set.

^^the keyboard just takes getting used to. I'm no Apple fan but I have to admit, the iphone is a really cool device. With ms exchange active sync push tech on the iphone 2 software, they're trying to muscle into the corporate market. I still think it would be a while before they could compete effectively with Blackberry or even Palm but they're getting there.

This is probably going to be my next phone. I need something on which I can play mp3s with, take notes, do some mapping (with gps), take decent pictures and work as a phone with occasional web browsing. I can't think of another device that can do all of these as well and with as clear a screen for the price ($199-299).

I have verizon wireless right now and I'm pretty happy with the coverage. I heard AT&T is decent down here so coverage shouldn't be a problem (hopefully). If they unlock this, it would be cool as I don't mind staying with Verizon. Can't wait!

so it looks like those prices are a little misleading. the thought now is those are the prices if you're eligible for an upgrade only, i.e. a new customer or an out of contract existing AT&T customer. those of us who are not eligible for an upgrade must pay full price. previously because there were no subsidies on the iphone like other phones you could sign up at any time and you'd pay the same price as everyone else.
