New headlights?

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some more powerful headlights for a 2000 Mazda Protege ES? The lights on my car, although fine, are a bit dim, and I would like for them to be brighter. Are there any specific lamps I should look for? And, for example, if I were to go for high-powered lamps such as Xenon, would I need to mess with the wiring?

Eagle Eye. Cheap and they look just like OEM at less than half the price.

DDM tuning sells decent quality HID kits, they are plug and play and the brightest lights you can get. Beware of cheap headlight housings, I have seen new sets with non-functioning beam adjusters right out of the box.

If you buy aftermarket headlights for your Protege, Depo makes the best quality ones in my experience. Those and a set of Silverstar bulbs will make a nice difference and not get you pulled over for crappy beam patterns.

Also, don't forget that the P5 and other proteges do not share the same headlights. Make sure you get H4 sedan lights, not H7 Protege5.

I have had cheap HID kits for almost 10 years in different vehicles and have never been pulled over for it. Mostly depends on the police in your area.

I actually never had a problem either in the Protege5. My problem was McCullough ballasts that kept blowing up. I finally just gave it up. That was 10 years ago though and I'm sure those guys went out of business..

OP, if you DO decide on an HID kit, my advice is to get the 35watt one. Some people have melted their headlight housings with 55w kits.

I'm gonna throw in for Philips Xtremevision bulbs. Had better luck and lighting than the Silverstars. HIDs are better light but scatters everywhere in oem housings. Mine were pointed so low to not blind everyone that my brights hit like fogs so I got some 3000k yellow halogen 9005s. Got some retro housings but they will need a little work so the projector isn't vibrating all over the place......maybe next year.
