2002 Mazda Protege5
Hey guys I just recently stumbled across a MazdaSpeed set up for $175 it includes ECU, manifold, downpipe, turbo, and also has other hoses and wires. I was not think about boosting my P5 but know I see this for cheap I really want to pick it up. So I'm trying to keep the price down I know I need to buy an intercooler and piping. I just need to know if I need to change any of my engines internals I currently have 140k on the engine and it will be a DD. Any help would be very helpful thanks.

Thanks that's what I thought but I just wanted to make sure. Got my Honda cousin going own that my Protege was going to blow no matter how low boost I ran with stock internals

you will be fine under 10 psi. Just look at getting a SSAFC if you get the kit. The stock ECU is pig rich and the car will most likely bog down because of all the fuel being dumped. Two essential things you will need are a boost gauge and a wideband air/fuel gauge. More importantly, get supporting bolt ons before turning the boost up...like intake and exhaust, plus you already mentioned getting an intercooler. Also, with the power increase from the turbo, you will most likely end up buying a set of aftermarket motor mounts, the stock mounts are going to tear up quickly. Wish you had a LSD, it would be a little more fun, but that can come later on. The turbo kit itself is already a big enough project for now.

The stock piston/rod combination seems to work fine up to around 13:1 dynamic compression IIRC. What will kill your engine quickly is how you drive it and boost spikes IMO.
