Here's the deal. I have a '00 Mazda Protege LX that I've been trying to "revive". I plan on picking up a new stereo this weekend and installing it soon after. I love music, and while I only spend on average about 30% of my day in my car, I still want something that sounds nice. Something I'll be able to enjoy XM or my iPod on, or perhaps a good CD. Now, the other thing I should mention here is that I am a family man, and routinely take my 2 year old son to daycare, and on the weekend, use the car to travel here and there with my wife and son. I've never been the type of person to crank up the volume to its limits when I have my family in the car, nor do I do so when traveling through neighborhoods and the like.
Now, this is the dilemma I am having right now. I know that once I install the new stereo, new life will be breathed into the factory speakers. Eventually, I'll replace those as well, but for now I'm going to start with the headunit itself. Once the HU is installed, I want to add some bass to the car. Nothing loud, but something that will give me just enough thump whether I'm listening to rock, metal, hip-hop, jazz, or whatever I'm in the mood for (I have a pretty eclectic music taste). I've been doing some research and have found some worthy ideas that would fulfill this need for a "fuller" sounding system. But here's what's really poking me. I have an MTX Sledgehammer box with a 12" MTX Thunder sub and applicable amp that came out of my last car. I've been trying to sell this setup for about 2 years now and have had no luck, nor have I had any real interest. Unit sounded awesome, but I feel like it is a bit too much for what I want. I know that I can easily tune it down enough to fit what I'm looking for, and not only that, since I already have something I wouldn't need to go out and incur another expense. Then again I still have these conflicting thoughts in my head that also revolve around the weight of the unit. I rarely carry anything in the trunk of my car, so space isn't too much an issue. The overall size of the box would still leave me with sufficient space to put groceries and the like when needed. But then, I could easily just pick-up something smaller that may not yield all the bass that what I have will, but I'll at least still be able to keep quite a bit of room leftover.
I really don't know what I should do. Obviously from reading this you can see just how boggled my thoughts are right now. I plan on taking over my wife's Milan next summer, and am considering transfering whatever car audio I have to that car. I am not sure what I'll do with the Protege; I may keep it or even sell it. I guess what I'm looking for is a unanimous vote to do one thing or the other; should I fork out the expense and get something smaller size-wise, as well as power-wise, or should I just put in what I have now...saving myself from an additional expense and calling it a day?
