I am about to purchase the Inno racks for my 06 Mazda 5. I'd like to get a bag to use on top since I really don't have a place to store a box when not in use. I really like the Rola 59150 roof top carrierhttps://www.amazon.com (commissions earned)

But I'd like to spend under $100. Is there anything out there worth looking into that cheap? Thanks!

Cargo bags generally speaking aren't nearly as good as the hard plastic cargo boxes. That being said, I know space is an issue for you.

Personally, I wouldn't cheap out on a cargo bag and I would do a ton of research before I pulled the trigger on buying one. The main issue with the cargo bags is they leak. None of them are water tight.

Friends of mine have a Yakima and the Thule. Both bags leak enough that my friends put their stuff in garbage bags to keep things dry.

Bags suck. If you MUST have one, get a cheapie like a Rubbermaid. Don't spend any real money on one, because the weatherproofing goes bad after only a couple hundred miles of being buffeted by freeway-speed winds. I hunted on craigslist for some time until I found a box for about $100. I got sick of my stuff inside the bag being covered with rubber flakes and the bag banging around making all sorts of racket on the roof.

What they said! I too looked into a bag as they were on the cheap side of buying a box but I didn't want to hear the grief from the wife and kids about everything being soaked once we got to our destination. And just remember, when on those long highway trips when you hit a good downpour, traffic will be crawling increasing the odds of your gear getting wet. If you just can't find the space to store a box though, I'd suggest wrapping your stuff up in garbage bags before packing into the cargo bag.

I went through the same thing- was renting a place with limited storage space and didn't want to put the box away when not using it. I thought about getting a bag because they roll up so nicely and don't take up space- also, they can easily be removed from the roof and taken into a hotel room without unpacking!

Then then my brother told me about the one time he tried a bag. The roof of their rental van had side bars, so he and a bunch of friends filled a roof-bag from walmart will all their stuff and tied it on. When they got to their destination, the roof had actually dented inward where the bag had been. All the weight was not evenly distributed and the roof wasn't strong enough at the point it was resting. They were able to pull it back out before returning the rental, but I would imagine doing it all the time on a little car like the 5 would not be a great idea. What they do sell is a tray/rack sort of thing, looks like a metal wire lattice. Your things could then be thrown into that and tied down, so it isn't resting directly on the car.

The problem with this is that you still have to deal with the waterproofing as mentioned earlier, but now you have to find a place to store something approximately the same length as a box. Also, the lack of aerodynamics is also going to give a more negative hit on your MPG and wind noise.
At the end of the day, I went with a Sears X-cargo box and just made room for it in storage by stuffing things inside it when not in use. Can't say anyone thinks the bag is a good idea!

I'm sure there must be an expandable roof bag with a solid bottom somewhere on the market... if not, it might be time to GET one on the market.

Nah. Already done and apperantly not very popular. It's been mentioned here before.

Thule Ranger 90. User reviews sound really good and it was on a crazy sale before it was discontinued.
