Need Motor
Yup, SOL.

Looked at a used P5 at a car lot today. 114k miles @ $7200. Beat up, rusty, poor shape.

Mine at 190K looks almost new compared to their offering. So it may be worth a used motor. Nonehteless, it still has 190k on all the parts.
Used motor is taking a chance. Best price I've found so far is $1300 for used 100k miles(no way of knowing if any good) + $900 install.

Any thoughts?

There are some guys on ebay who sell low mileage FSDEs from Japan. They're supposed to be pretty good engines, from what I have heard, and they're way cheaper than $1300...maybe half that. Perhaps someone on here has dealt with them directly. I think they're located in NJ if I remember right.

I hope you don't mean the FS-ZE because while it is a very similar motor there is more to it than that. And you have to find an FS-ZE ECU. But they have more powa than our USDM FS-DE's. If you're looking to stay stock, keep an eye on eBay or use that SpeedCircuit link above. I know a few cats (including myself) who have had good luck with eBay motors.

Don't understand what you are talking about concerning can't just drop in.
Need "expalnation for dummies".
FSDE? FS-ZE? ECU?
Most of what I know on the P5 has been from you guys here.
A more powerful motor from Japan, China, etc, at halsf price would be great.
Please explain.

Hmm, I'm no expert on the JDM FS-DE/ZE but that motor looks a lot like my friends FS-DE in his USDM 626. And as far as I know, JDM motors don't have EGR valves, and that one clearly does. I know my JDM KL didn't have an EGR. And that ones got the coil pack set up like an FP-DE, like the 1.8l Protege's. But it very well could be a JDM FS-DE.

Stickman, I would guess the best thing for you to do is find a good, low mileage USDM FS-DE for your P5. That way the swap will simply be plug and play. If you got a JDM motor there might be some things like emissions you would need to modify or take care of. However, as you've noticed USDM motors are stupid expensive here. And that $900 for labour is amazing. Though I guess it is about a 12 hour job for a swap. I would suggest scouring eBay for just another low mileage USDM FS-DE and call around to local shops for the best swap quote.

I would suggest doing it yourself to save yourself the $900 in labour if that's an option.

Found mechanic to swap out for $500 labor. Now big issue is finding a used motor I can trust.
PrivAte or scrap yard, no one really knows much about what they are selling, as they haven't used motor themselves.
JDM doesn't even have any. Everyone else is around $1000 - 1300 for 100k+ miles.
So, kind of in motor limbo.

Checked Speedcircuit.net. No phone numer to check what's available. No milleage, just a price. Just email; they control contact and whether to respond or not.
