Mazdaspeed Protege #386
Ok. I dont know extactly what the problem is so if anyone has any clue please post. My wife was driving the car when she said the cultch or transmission started to grind and the car started to slow down. After she stoped at a red ligth the car would not go when it was in first gear. I tried driving it in first gear and the car just grinds. Still goes into gear tho. When i put it in reverse it grinds but dose move alittle. What could be wrong with it? Could it be clucth, transmission or lsd?

damn. if it is then ill have to add myself to the list, lol. I'll probably take it to the mechanic and see whats wrong. Just dont have time to do it myself anymore. Ill let u guys know in a couple of days. If you guys have any ideas let me know.

Ok so if it is my lsd thats gone then wat is the best replacement for it?

MAZDASPEED Protege Updated & TIG WELDED Limited Slip Differential (LSD) for $529.00

OR

Welded Mazdaspeed Torsen Style Limited Slip Differential $619.00

And these are both direct replacements right?

Oh yea my car is at 92,XXX miles and it feels like i need a new clutch. What im thinking is that get it now so i dont have to go throught the head ache later.

Im thinking:

Exedy Stage 1 Performance Clutch Kit For around $288

What do u guys think?

Exedy clutch and welded stock LSD. The stock LSD -- so long as it's welded -- is pretty strong. Spend the $100 elsewhere.

Ok took it to the shop. Did a rebuild, clucth, and lsd. Now there is a rattling noise when i shift gears. Going to take it back to the shop. Just wanted to know what it might be before I take it to the shop so i dont get any BS answer from them. Anyone knows what it can be?

Oh yea dont ask, it was alot. =(

did you get it welded? please say you got it welded i dont want to see you go through another one

Sorry to say. No. Took it to the shop and was going to get a welded lsd from street unit but they had none in stock, was going to take a couple of days and the shop need the car out (was there for almost a week). So i got it from a dealer, the shop was kinda in a hurry too.

Never a good sign when the shop is in a hurry to get your car out...

they're serving you, not the other way around... You shoulda gotten the car back in the condition you wanted... and TRUST me, you wanted a welded diff... I wish you the best of luck, but if you don't snap the new one in the next 50-80K, it will be just that: extremely good luck.

my LSD went out about 20,000 miles ago had mazda put the revised one in. i have a 2003. So what is the difference between the 03 stock LSD and the "revised LSD"

essentially, how hard it grips. The revised is actually less effective (allows more slip) from what I've heard.
