2003.5 Titanium-Gray Mazdaspeed Protege
Ok So I have this good friend of mine that is a total car nerd, and always finds reasons to make fun of my MSP. Recently, he called to leave me a phone message telling me that he just found out the MSP uses the same transmission as the ford Escort and Hahahahaha. So, he has a 2000 Focus that is slow as balls...probably cranking out a SICK 120 to the wheels with intake, exhaust, headers, etc. He is currently doing a SVT motor swap (he has got just about everything else SVT as well) and now thinks he will be faster than me. First of all...does the MSP use the Escort transmission? Second...I WANT AS MUCH DIRT ON THE FOCUS AS POSSIBLE. From 2000 to 2004, regular and SVT...EVERYTHING. This guy really thinks he made the automotive purchase of the century when he decided on the illustrious Ford Focus, so please help me crush his car-ego to smitherines. I want to know about shared parts with lame cars, horrible TSBs, random engine fires, if you have pictues of fat people next to a Focus...ANYTHING. Much appriciated. If I have to hear about how lame my wheel bearings are or some s*** without a techy comeback to shut him up, I may just tie his face to my turbo and do continuous 1/4 mile runs.

Can't help you out too much on the tech end, but I do know that the Focus has had more recalls than any other vehicle (the last I heard).

focus recalls That, and I'm sure the focus shares numerous parts with the escort, try doing on a focus forum and asking the same q there, juust without the motive part added. Just ask what parts they share with other cars. BTW, I'm looking and can't find anything that says the MSP and escort share the same tranny.....want to ask your friend for a reliable source? Not saying I don't believe it since Mazda = Ford but just saying a reliable source would be lovely. Yeah, I wouldn't be too proud to own a car that's manufactured by a company that builds exploding SUVs.

Hahaha YES!! Excellent!! MORE!! Let the hate flow! Posts simply saying "the focus is gay" are also acceptable. I may send him a link if this gets good. thx.

how about this....the same tranny in the proteges is the same one in my 13s Taurus SHO.

Ask your friend how well he thinks he'll hang with your MSP in a turn. Then ask your friend to look up his resale value of his frankenstein foci. Also ask to listen to his stock audio system. Make sure to compare stock wheels also.

A stock MSP will outperform the svt focus. I think there is a pretty good comparo about that in motortrend about a year ago.

Yeah, I know that from several reviews...he wont be stock, but he won't be THAT modded. I think he has MSP envy. The Titanium is the most sexy b**** on the block. Other cars weep at its hawtness.

g25mr = 1st gen protege tranny, which later was put into an escort gt, a variation of which is in the msp. so the escort gt and gt ONLY has a protege transmission, not the other way around

the best response is "dude, you own a focus!"

this disqualifies him from saying anything about the MSP or any car for that matter...

^^^HAha tried that...he's got all these justifications and reasons why he thinks it's tha s***. Must use large supply of fact ammo to destroy him.

First off, it's a Focus. Same deal as an SRT-4. Even if they are faster everyone knows they have horrible quality records. Secondly, if your friend is as big a car geek as I am, then no doubt he reads Car and Driver, Road & Track, etc. Pull up as many old articles as you can. I'm pretty sure the MSP was rated higher than the SVT in nearly every magazine comparison that was done.

I would remind him all you need is a boost controller.

some highlights - 11 safety recalls, 2 shy of the record, from things like engine fires, airbag pre-deployment, suspension failure, and fuel pump failure
rotors wearing out before the pads and having chunks of the rotor fall off
non-existent trade in value
other issues of the poster:
1. Snapped clutch spring
2. Leaking power steering fluid resulting in a new rack and pinion
3. Dead radio
4. Four, yes four, DPFE sensors
5. Sway bar endlinks, 2 pair
6. Dead fuel pump
7. Dead A/C (it's in the shop as I type this and they don't know what's wrong).
8. Dead Thermostat (resulting in overheating)
9. Leaking manual transmission (they're also trying to figure that out right now).
10. New heat shield

Just smoke him and tell him never to talk s*** bout the MSP again and besides, it is just a focus.
