Mazda Protege 5
A couple of months ago I was in the market for a P5 (for a short while), but had to back down because of some retarded dealer by my house. Now I'm definetly in the market now because my car will be going to my dad (his 01' Protege went to my brother).

The reason I backed down last time was because my dealer tried selling me a Yellow 03.5 P5 for about $20k OTD. Those cars were going for much less in early January. So now I'm back in the market and need a few prices that I should pay. I'm guessing their even cheaper now because the Mazda 3 has been out for a while.

I will be going through my own bank so it is a cash deal. (Chicago Area)
I would like black or yellow, but any color would do except white.
I HAVE to have the leather/cd changer option, and the ABS/side airbag option. All other options I don't care about but am willing to pay for if they come with the car. I want to know how much I should pay OTD.

Thanks to all that help!

Welcome to the boards.

I have the leather/cd changer option and the ABS/SRS option as well and let me tell you, it was a b**** trying to find one last May when I bought mine (I didn't want yellow or laser blue - I got a Midnight Blue, w/ moonroof and 5-speed, leather, 6-disc, ABS/SRS, and polished alloys). If I was gonna get any other color, it would have been Red just because I don't see to many red ones, much less good looking shiny ones :D

I can't imagine paying anything more than $15000 OTD right now. I'd suggest you look at Mazda's website and search for a Protege5 with options checked.

Also, call dealers in the area. I'd rather drive out of town and find the car and end up paying less than getting screwed locally.

Good luck!

And come to the meet anyway! Protege5 or not :-)

I'm actually talking to a dealer now. He says the "fancy auto" costs a lot extra.
Here is the car I'm thinking about getting and the price they are offering:

Yellow P5
Auto
Leather
ABS/Sideairbags
Moonroof/changer
polished wheels
roof rack
cargo net

The best deal he's going for is $17OTD

hey shareef.....ur the guy with the cavy right ....im one of andy and ricardos friends.......welcome

Yeah that's me. Got to switch over to auto. Bummer huh. Looks like I'll be talking to you more as soon as I finally get a P5. Current dealer offer (seems reasonable to me, but what would I know I paid 20k for a P5 a month ago (uhm) ).

Yellow P5
Auto
Leather
Moonroof/CD Changer
ABS/Side airbags
Roofrack
Polished Wheels
$16.5 OTD (went to the boss, hopes he accepts the deal)

that whole "lemmie go talk to my manager" thing is bulls***
WHY AUTO!?!?!?! :'(

tell him $16,5 and I get to **** your wife
$15,7 and I wont send her the pictures of your girlfriend

nice

what dealer did u go to ??? if its the autobarn talk to the sales manager...tell him my name and he should hook u up..ive bought 2 cars from him in the pst year

And how do I justify the 15.7k price?
I qualify for the $2500 rebate, $1000 manf. to dealer incentive, $500 auto show bonus and the $500 college grad. That's $4500 off.

What is invoice? I was told invoice is 19.3k + 1.7k for TTL - 4.5k (discounts) and i should be looking at $16.5k

Is invoice supposed to be lower, or are their more discounts that I'm missing. I'm probably gonna go to the dealer tomorrow and start working on a deal. I'd appreciate it if someone tells me what part i'm missing to get the lower price.

thanks.

Ask to see the invoice (they are obligated to show it to you if you ask).

The $15.7k could be justified by the matter that they are paying inventory cost for just having the car on the lot. Hey, you don't have anything to lose if you ask! I'd shoot for the $15.7 (get a pic of the wife first....).

What dealer are you going to? Seriously....go to Autobarn in Countryside...I got mine there too..use Matt's and my names if need be (we could be you're f'in cousins or something...).

I paid around like $17.2k OTD including (and Chicago taxes) taxes and after rebates, incentives, and recent college grad discount last May.

Don't even start me up on Autobarn. I bought a yellow P5 their last month. I paid $20k OTD. YES $20K (omg). But luckily enough I joined this great forum and realized how much I F***ed my self and was able to return the car on a technicality. They cussed and screamed and wouldn't go below $18k. So I just don't wanna deal with them any more.

Also I noticed that invoice is actually $18.7k. So the price is now:
$18.7 + $1.7k TTL - $4.5k discounts = $15.9k

So I'll offer him $16 just so they can make a hundred bucks. They guy is really nice.

Oh yeah, the dealership is Jacobs Twin in Chicago.

you should be able to get it for ~$16K otd with your rebates. dont take any bs from the dealer otherwise you will get ******. car salesmen are evil

Jacobs Twin will deal. They play the game pretty good, but you can get out of there with the deal you want. Matthew posted a while a back on this board about cutting a deal at the car dealers. I thought it gave pretty good insight on how the dealer works.

Just remember the best way to get the price down is to WALK AWAY, act like you're interested in some other car at some other dealership as well

i like aric's idea! sounds like a great idea!

i wouldnt pay over $16,5. go to some other dealers and compare prices. thats what i did.

16k? These cars fully equipped without rebates should sell for no higher than 14k. Rosen Mazda was looking to dump their remaining stock at prices like that.

Welcome to the big board, shareef777.

Don't buy from Schaumburg for any car. It's a good place to shop but not to get a deal.

What I did when I bought my first new car (the pro5) back in 2001 was to look at an idiot's car buying guide at borders. They gave good strategies to buying new cars:

Buy at the end of the month: dealers are getting new shippments near the 1st and they have to pay insurance on each unit on the lot per day. They don't like paying insurance on overstock.

Buy on a weekday: tons of walkups (customer) are on the lot on saturdays, so salespeople are less inclined to make a deal. One monday walkup might be the only sale they'll make that day.

Call all mazda dealers in a 30(60,90,etc) mile radius. Ask the name of their fleet(mazda) manager. Fax a letter saying that you want a new pro5 with <10 miles (so you don't get their test model) in yellow with these options:
"Auto
Leather
ABS/Sideairbags
Moonroof/changer
polished wheels
roof rack
cargo net"
Add all the options dollar wise next to them and show discounts with a total of $17k OTD on the bottom. Ask them to make a deal and you'll buy the car from them. After you get 6 responses with $16k $15.5k, then re-send to those 6 responses with $15.5k OTD. You'll probably only get one response and that'll be the dealership you'll get a deal. Now you can try to negotiate in person or buy sight unseen.

That's how I did it and I saved a bundle at the time from Bill Jacob's Joliet. (I'm from Arlington Hts) I was tired of wasting my saturdays and mileage to try to get a deal. I like the head to head nature of the sale, but it consumed too much of my time. I also used an efax account without return address so I wouldn't be bothered by salespeople.

Also look at www.mazdausa.com to search inventories of dealers. The dealer with multiple yellow pro5s and multiple Mazda3 wagons maybe a place to get a deal.

Be prepared to spend more than 8 hours of research on this $20k investment. Next to a house, a car is the highest priced investment people in America make.

I hope this information helps. Good luck stickin' it to the stealership!(upbum)

i'm the victim of Schaumburg mazda....
in 2001 I paid 23K with tax and extended warranty + 4.9% APR even though I had no credit.
but it doesn't matter, I love my p5 anyway.
