Need exaust help!!

Alright, I have been on a crusade to find a local shop that will build me a 2.5in cat back. I have been calling around to all the exaust shops around town and I keep getting the same crap story. They say that legally they cannot touch my Cats, i.e. replace them with a high flow single. They say if they do it they will get fined a s*** load, also if I do it myself that I could get busted later on if I need a emissions check. Can someone validate this, I am just having a tough time believing it.

Thanks

its true. its up to i think a 10k fine for them, and possible fine for you. its unlikely to ever happen, but its true, because its illegal to tamper with any emission control device.

btw a cat back wouldnt eliminate either of your cats, it would bolt onto the second cat and go from there.

Yeah I wanted to eventually turn it into a full 2.5 in. Buy the ass end fist then buy the down pipe later with a high flow inbetween. I guess it would be a down pipe back.

spool sells a 2.5" cat back, although it is cheaper to do a custom setup.

you are not legally allowed to touch the cats unless they have been ruled defective or you have 50,000 miles on your car.

i could find no mention of this supposed 50k miles rumor...i would like to see your source

so basically they said no because you wanted downpipe back exhaust system? meaning to replace both cats?

your best bet if your lookin to do that is to just buy a downpipe that has a hi flow cat in it or one without and dot hat install yourself.

Then the shop can either do the cat-back exhaust(which should have no legality issues since it is CAT BACK) or put in a hi flow the same time they do the exhaust.

now is it still illegal for them to touch the cats if they are replacing them with higher flow cats or is it only illegal if they take them out completely.

cause technically if you do a downpipe with hi flow and 2nd hi flow then you still have 2 cats. I really dont know the legality issues about this but here are the links to the web sites which have all the info about legal issues with car mods.

since ur in idaho Ill post that link, if anyone else wants the links for their state let me know. I could post a new thread with all the links.

i dont think they make high flows for our pre-cats, if the MSPs are the same as all the other proteges, its a real odd size, nothing like your second cat.

Yeah I think I might buy the downpipe w/high flow and do that part myself. I am still gonna see if I can get the back done by a shop, seems soooo much cheaper if I can find quality. Has any body been to corksport.com lately. They have a down pipe and a bunch of other s*** for the MSP coming out soon. Cought me off guard when I looked at their site. COOL. Well thanks for the info guys.

hmmm....that used to be the case here in texas. but i just checked the texas transportation code. here is what they said:

547.605. Emission Systems Required

(a) The engine and power mechanism of a motor vehicle shall be equipped and adjusted to prevent the escape of excessive smoke or fumes.

(b) A motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine, of a model year after 1967, shall be equipped to prevent the discharge of crankcase emissions into the ambient atmosphere.

(c) The owner or operator of a motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine, of a model year after 1967, that is equipped with an exhaust emission system:

(1) shall maintain the system in good working condition;

(2) shall use the system when the motor vehicle or motor vehicle engine is operated; and

(3) may not remove the system or a part of the system or intentionally make the system inoperable in this state, unless the owner or operator removes the system or part to install another system or part intended to be equally effective in reducing atmospheric emissions.

(d) Except when travel conditions require the downshifting or use of lower gears to maintain reasonable momentum, a person commits an offense if the person operates, or as an owner knowingly permits another person to operate, a vehicle that emits:

(1) visible smoke for 10 seconds or longer; or

(2) visible smoke that remains suspended in the air for 10 seconds or longer before fully dissipating.

(e) An offense under this section is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not less than $1 and not more than $350 for each violation. If a person has previously been convicted of an offense under this section, an offense under this section is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not less than $200 and not more than $1,000 for each violation.

Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.

i stand corrected then. and this is good news :) guess i can replace my two cats with a single hi-flow one anytime i please.
