okay i decided I'm going to get the mazda intake and exhaust cam and the high compression 10.7 to 1 pistons, i'm not going turbo b/c too much money and plus i have an auto, i was thinking about trading my car in, but thats not gonna work. so i'll just wait for turbo on my next car. Anyway i was wondering... if i get these mods done, how much hp will i pick up? The srmotorsports site says the intake cam will give 12hp and the exhasut cam will give 10hp which is so not true from what i hear, but don't you think i will at least pick up 20whp from all 3 mods??? I'm not expecting to get huge gains on these mods, i just want a little more power. Also in order to do these mods, my dealer will not do it, and it will proabbly void the warranty, so for the few peoiple out there that have had the cams and high compression pistons installed, where did u take it and how much did it cost to install? And is it really that hard to install cams, i think it would be alright, except i don't wanna !@#$ up the timing and s***. anyway any suggestions/advise would be great . :D

Is this your daily driver or a project car? thats my first question. If its a project car, yank the motor ans spend the extra bucks to have someone build it for you. (not being rude, but from your questions, you dont sound to mechanically inclined, and if ya go messin with engine inernals and screw sometin up, your out an engine.) This way you know for sure the work was done right and whoever built it will usually supply some sort of warranty on thier work. As far as pricing to do this work, you can look upwards to 3-4k for it.

If its your daily driver. Stick to bolt on mods until your warranty is up. If you mess with internals and blow the motor, you gotta make sure you hve at least 2k laying around to replace it with a used one from a junkyard.

As far as gains? you would not see much, maybe 10-12 whp, without first doing other mods. Running hotter cams and higher compression will mean alot more then just dropping them in. Your chainging the characteristics of air intake, pressurisation, and exhaust. Thus, port and polishing of your throttle body all the way to the head and exhust mainfold would be needed to see any true gains and avoid detonation due to running rich on fuel. Also you will need to remap your computer for the higher compression, and airflow characteristics.

Along with these mods, you sitll wont see any great gains without the simple bot ons, like a cold air intake, high flow cat, and exhaust, or even a decent intake manifold.

May I suggest starting small with a set of cam gears,an underdrive pulley, cold air intake, high flow exhaust (i.e. thermal, apexi, tanabe) a better spark control unit and bigger plug wires and plugs.....with these simple mods you could expect anywhere from 12-20 whp gains.

Hope that helps, and no disrespect to you my good sir, I just would not want you to go and blow a piston rod through the side of your engine.:D

This is my daily driver, okay... i have Injen CAI intake, Exhaust, sparcko wires and sprak plugs... thats it. i would like to go turbo, but decided not to, I'm not expecting to get 160whp or anything by adding cams and high compresion pistons, and i don't plan on doing the work my self. So i don't see how motor will blow or mess up, and i didn't think it would be nessacary to port and polish the throttle body either, but i would help and def. a set of cam gears.

"Also you will need to remap your computer for the higher compression, and airflow characteristics."

Is that true? I did not relaize this....

Aye, your computer is set from the factory to a set tolerance for air flows and fuel flows. Also, bumping up compression, you need more fuel and spark delivered to get the right combustion.

As far as port and polishing, you dont have to do it to your t/b but you will need it done to the head to se the real gains your internal mods will get you. port matching and polishing the t/b will give better airflow characteristics, thus improving the gains the mods you want to do.

I would suggest calling a local engine machine shop, and talk to them about your needs. They should be able to give you a price on the work. Also they can tell you how long your car will be off the road, and if they will warranty thier work.

Ohh and with the mods you would like to do, youcan see 160whp, if the job is done correctly.

160whp would be great, i would be satisfied with that, that would be like 185hp at the crank right? Also, for the few people out there that have installed high compression pistons & cams, what did u do besides install the parts? Did u re-program the ECU or what? Just kinda confused, hope more people respond to my forum.
