Nearest Mazda Dealer is 2 hours Away...How Big a Disadvantage?

I don't consider any car that tops out over 30K a "throwaway car". Of course as a pretty hardcore enthusiast...I don't think of any car as a throwaway car. Or an appliance. You can be an enthusiast over a Chevy Spark. You can find value in that over another model I would hope. (I don't know much about a Spark). Because it's not expensive it's an appliance? Or a throwaway? Maybe if I made 4 times the amount of money, I'd have that attitude?
Re: RDX. Bosses wife has one. She knows I love cars so she let me check our her new very high end one. Gaudy was all I could think of. Too over the top. Far to lux for my tastes. The seat felt bigger them my recliner. The center console...Jesus...like a TV tray. No way. Seriously rather have my car.

Volvo kind of pisses me off, though with the current lineup. It wasn't like this just a few years ago. XC-60 starts at 41-something. Heated Seats not standard. That's an extra $750. Volvo has 8, count 'em 8, option packages for that car. That's a bit ridiculous.

Gotta keep up with BMW, yo! If you can't add 50% to base MSRP with "packages", you ain't legit!

I personally wouldn't ever consider spending over $30K on this car, though. It doesn't warrant it in my book. That's fun-car or serious vehicle money. This is a nice little run-about and should give me many years of service, I hope, with a minimum of drama.

Who brought up 36k???

What do you engineer?

I'm going for an AWD diesel with the heads up display and well equipped. I suppose is we had a 2 liter sport stick FWD its almost in a different class.

I design electro-mechanical mechanisms in consumer devices.

I've had 4 primary cars over the last 29 years.

? Isuzu Imark $1500
1976 Mercedes 240D very used
? Infiniti G20 used
2000 Acura 3.2TL new

Now I live in the country/forest for the last 6 years with a steep driveway, have to haul the trash cans to the main road for collection, use 40lb bags of salt for the water softener, and such. I'm looking forward to the utility without giving up on life.

I paid 25k for mine so for vehicles this is a full on budget throw away vehicle. Isn't worth crap for resale. If I'm going 30k plus I'm not looking at a cx-5.

A throw away car is a sub $14k (brand new) Kia Rio. Are people really lumping a CX-5 into that category? (scratch)

You all are hilarious.

Anything you buy that is worth more to keep than sell is a throw away item. I'd say the CX-5 falls into this category as do most. Just depends on how much you are willing to throw away.

Damn I think I just wasted $32k on an appliance :(

jk lol But seriously, I think the Mazda brand is truly an enthusiast brand and you probably need to love driving to enjoy it. I have a local dealer 5 miles away and another one about 10 and then one about 25+ miles away. Sometimes for the heck of it I go to the far one just because I love to drive this car, mostly on weekends when there's less traffic. To the OP, I think it all comes down to how much you love this brand. If you're just buying an appliance, just buy one locally like what @Unobtanium would do. I'm lucky there are few mazda dealers around me that isn't too far but if it is a 2 hour drive, it would be a tough call. Honestly though, I would still go for it even if it's a 2 hour drive. Any normal maintenance I'll just do it locally at a good shop and any TSB or dealer specific repairs I will just go up there during the weekend, schedule ahead of time of course.

I had a budget of $35k on a new car, I loved my 2014 mazda3 sgt hatchback but needed something bigger. Of all the CUV's out there, I think the CX-5 is one of the best looking one, and for what you get for the $$$ it's a win win in my book. Plus I don't see the CX-5 as being an appliance as much as other cars, I actually want to drive this car whereas you need to drive it for the other choices. Coming from the mazda3, the new CX-5 is more mature and feels more grown up. I still want to enjoy my drive to and from work so it was a no brainer to stick with mazda. If I wanted a cheap appliance I would have gotten a rav-4 and continue with my dull life. Also, I tend to get the fully loaded versions of whatever car I get (within budget) and if I have gotten a fully loaded rav4 it'll still be dull. One thing I love about owning a mazda is that you don't see them at every stop light, so to say. I wish mazda does well and sell lots of cars but it's nice to drive a car you don't see everywhere. When I first got the 2014 mazda3 back in late 2013, I drove around for about a year and have only seen a handful of them. I've had the CX-5 for a little over two weeks now and I've only seen one 2017 on the road.

If at the time you are throwing it away can you send it to me? I will pay shipping. Also I will accept anything with 150,000 miles. Let me know. Thank you.

Just need it for a hobby car. Since it will be free I can upgrade some parts.

I think you're missing my point. For instance if I'm looking for something that is going to help me out financially shall I need to do a fire sale the CX-5 is not the place to look for that. It is worth far more to the owner than it is to sell. These are just the facts of cars and it is harsher on a CX-5 because of warranty. I knew this going in and I still know I made the right choice for me but these cars aren't worth chit.

Huh...pretty sure 99% or cars depreciate the second you drive it off the lot. (scratch)

But was your Jeep GC was worth the $40k+? That car certainly drives worse than the cx5 and it's not much faster if at all. Yes, it was more luxurious but at thousands more. Didn't you buy that new?

My attitude is that this is an appliance. It's reliable, trustworthy, and functional. It's all about convenience at a low cost.

Agree with you 100%. For all of the cars in this category, it's just a matter of which ones check off the most boxes for ones needs.

If a car isn't fun to drive, I don't want to drive it and I certainly won't own it. It has nothing to do with price and everything to do with what it feels like to drive it through some corners. It isnt track times or g force it is how much it makes me grin.

Here is a fun car for $22,000

an appliance isn't fun. The CX-5 is.

Exactly. It's a car you keep until it's got about 150-200k miles on it and you FINALLY break even in it, but by then, you might as well just keep it until it falls apart totally.

I am not implying it's a throw-away car, so to speak. I'm just implying that noone buys a CX5 because they want to. They buy it because it;s the cheapest thing that will meet their life situation at the moment and then they make excuses for it like "oh, it's fast" or some other misguided mess. I'm just not one for excuses. It was c heap AF, supposedly reliable, has AWD and ground clearance, and was supposed to get good mileage. It gets so-so mileage, but all the other factors have been accurate mostly so far, so I'm content with my coffee maker. I wash it once a month or so, and get oil-changes and tire rotations on schedule, and it delivers me to the places I want it to.

Well, if the CX5 makes you happy, it's personal. Noone can argue that, but I could get much more "happy" for a $4500 Honda Civic, if "corners" are what does it. Just sayin' You bought the CX5 because it does all the other s*** you want. The "it handles corners" is just what you tell yourself to feel better. Otherwise....why the hell did you buy it? 0.83g is like late 80's cheap sports-car territory.

Steep ass drive here too changed my tune pretty quick on awd is for pussies snow tires are for those in the know...yeah? BS i need both if not tracks! You did lose me @G20 tho just saying...you fell for that gussied up sentra? Old acuras were good i had an 06 stick tl but guess what..snow tired up... no bueno..traded in for crv yeah it was kinda sad but that thing torque steered like a drunken sailor so good riddance still had my mr2 turbo at that time...

I guess I'm an idiot then because I got it because I wanted to.

You are aware that your opinion doesn't apply to everyone else in the world, right?

I make good money. My wife makes fantastic money. I could have bought any car I wanted. True, I didn't want to drop a ton of money on a car. Could have bought a CPO Audi, BMW, Volvo, Or Mercedes. I chose the CX-5 cause she's sexy. I have fun driving my car. Every single time.
Hell I'm toying with the idea of Ubering once in awhile...because I want to drive my car more, not for the extra money. That's how much I like driving this car.

No, Imnotdedyet. He has no idea.

Frey's, I've never bought a car as a finical investment.
