Sure, and since you're new, just as an fyi - it's not difficult to keep your software updated. You don't need the dealership to do it. You will use TomTom Home and the instructions are at
http://us.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6218/kw/update software . It will updated the map as well as other data. If they come out with a new map within 90 days of your purchase, you can get it free using the Latest Map Guarantee - info at
http://www.tomtom.com/en_us/maps/latest-map-guarantee/
Also, if you're so inclined, you can change the avatar your map uses using the Menu but if you want you can also add a custom one:
1. Create the image to a size of 80x80 pixels.
2. Give the image a red background (RGB 255,000,000). (The red becomes transparent on your device)
3. Save the image as a 24 bit .bmp in the art\cars folder of your device.
I've attached the CX-5 in blue that I made in case it works for you.
Finally, you can use create points of interest using the NB1 but I find it to be cumbersome. I'd much rather input or search an online map and add the entry to a POI .ov2 file. You can easily do this by going to
http://www.poieditor.com/ and creating a POI file. Copy the .ov2 file to your map folder (for you, USA_Canada) and you're all set. If you want to get fancy, create a 24x24 bmp file with the same name and also put it in the map folder. Now your POIs will have your own graphic.
I said Finally already, but I just thought of one more thing.
It was recommended to me to periodically copy everything on my SD card to a folder on my computer so if I ever had an update fail or corrupted card I'd have something to start from. This advice turned out to be very helpful at one point so I also pass it on.
Have fun!
