Mazda Protege 5
Hey everyone, my wife was driving my protege5 the other day and the car would not idle and kept turning off on her. After some investigation I find some disconnected wires above the throttle body. Come to find out a squirrel decided my car would make a perfect home and wire from the car would be a perfect addition to it. I spliced all the wires back together and the car will idle now, but.... It will idle smoothly for about 30 sec. after I let off the gas then drop below 500 rpm, almost stall before raising back to around 600 to 700 rpm rough idle. If i hit the gas real quick it will idle smoothly again and in 30 sec the process repeats. Any help would be great to what is happening and if anybody knows what the connections go to may help as well. I will post some pics of the connections in hope that it will help.

Here are some pictures of the wires that were damaged.

throttle position sensor is the wires it looks like were damaged i would buy a new one and see if that fixes it, check air intake completely however as it may have gotten into more parts and chewed through more causing issues that you have yet to see.

Are both connections (Grey and Tan) apart of the throttle position sensor? The tan connection, both wires to it were chewed through and the grey connection only one wire to it was chewed. If both connections are different, what would the other one be so i can replace it as well?

Here is a picture of the two parts the connections connect to. If anyone can tell me what parts they are, it would help a lot.IMG_20140614_174409_336.webp

Gray is the IAC valve (Idle Air Contol valve). Tan plug is prc solenoid valve.
Neither of those are the throttle position sensor....

Thank you that helps a lot! Would both or one of those connections be causing my idle to do what it is doing? Or should I be looking somewhere else?

am an insurance adjuster. do you have insurance?. this should be a covered loss under your comprehensive coverage

Possibly the IAC, that is very important. But if your connections are decent it shouldn't be a problem. Are you sure there were no other damaged wires?

after looking again, i am sorry i mistakenly said throttle position sensor. yes that looks like the iac valve from your second pic post. as stated above me look all around, even remove the intake air tube and keep looking for more chewed wires

Ive looked many times to see other damage and dont see any. Although I am jacking up the car to look from the opposite way and see if i can see any thing new. Ive look on the internet about the iac valve and my problems seem to mock the symptoms of a dirty or faulty iac valve. I dont know if it may have been damaged because the car was drivin with the wire cut for a few miles.

I have had the intake problem before and have check before and while having this problem, and it is intact. Any other places to look that could be causing a rough idle besides the iac and intake?
