NA Tech Race to 100whp per 1000cc's

I don't know about anyone else, but for me, I want power. If Im spending money to push the limits of NA, I want my moneys worth. Hence the 2.5L

Something that I dont think has been covered in this thread yet is Electrical Theory. I mean pushing a car this hard, would the ignition system need to be improved. granted I'm using a different platform, so different things would apply. Anyone know any good sites on Performance ignition theory.

I'm pretty sure mechanically speaking everyone knows what is needed to reach the goal. Well in theory anyway.

I was looking at upgraded coilpacks (as I toasted one of mine) and MazdaMaxx had said that LS1 coils w/ an msd ignition will work... give me a sec to find the thread.

read what he says about the stock coils...there is no real reason to deviate from them.

i am not entirely familiar with the KLZE but what sort of ignition does it use?

one option on ignition is to go with an ECU that allows individual spark, and run something like what i've got... microtech X4 coil igniter with 4x Bosch HEC715 coil packs....

or you could go with a CDI system from someone like AEM, MSD or MoTeC...

The subject is definitely something I'll be looking into, in the coming nights

i'm going KL-ZE for sure all the way! Full Throttle..... Charlie's Angels 2
im getting the car back to its pretty self soon... then all the money, except bills and food, goes towards the build... i'm sure i really dont need cable TV, and 1300 minutes for my cell phone....... wish there was a way to put a 6speed in there... would really help in gas mileage... and acceleration... hmmm... i'm also looking at your ignition choice LW looks mighty interesting... keep up the good work guys!

yeah the bosch coils are bigger than anything you are likely to need on an NA build, unless you go REALLY silly (like stupidly long rods, stupidly high compression and stupidly high RPM - in which case i'd be looking at a MSD box, or some form of CDI setup) - they are cheap and a plug and play option on the microtech LT12S. They can also be spliced into any other ecu as the X4 box is just an igniter (i've assisted in installing a microtech X4 on a stinger EMS before, works a charm).

6 speed would be a little more trouble than its worth - most 6 speed transaxles i've seen are very weak....

your best bet is another 5 speed, but something with some more gearing options. MR2 turbo transaxle with an adapter plate, or something out of a honda would be useful.

theres been talk about using the svt focus' 6spd tranny, if someone really wanted to i would go to a transmission place and have them check it out, theres actually a shop right where i live called "Engine and Transmission Exchange" it could be worth to find out its not that expensive/hard to do, heck i might think about it looking into it

6 speed transmissions are generally less durable than their 5 speed cousins in the same design - because to accomodate the extra gear in the casing, the gears are made physically smaller. Longer shafts are often also used which amplifies the effects of shaft seperation.

The number of speeds a box has shouldn't be a consideration - how well it performs at high RPM should. You want something with double or triple cone synchros, and large shafts and end bearings to put up with massive shock loading.

if you go for something from toyota or honda, the aftermarket support for gearsets is great - you can build a box that has ratios perfect for speed or for economy, and you have lots of options with regards to differentials, gear types and so forth.

Hey LW, Where is YOUR build thread???

I'm allowed to enter? even though I have (essentially) the last word on who wins?

haha

no no, in all seriousness, my build is a case of slowly but surely...i've got a garage full of "stuff", and a whole stack of 3D designs for manifolds and so forth, but i've been unemployed for a few months now, so car stuff takes a back seat to keeping a roof over my head.

got a few oppertunities on the horizon though, and a bit of cash heading my way, so maybe i'll progress a little way this year...

Problem with my build (as opposed to yours, and the V6 guys) is that in order to get to 100hp/L (which is nowhere near what i want, i want NORTH of 100hp/L...), i can't do it in dribs and drabs, it has to be done in one hit, simply because everything depends on everything else....

Props, what you are undertaking is no small feat. (which you are well aware of) If you are sucessful though, you'll probably have the fastest na fsde out there. Think of all the people that said/thought na power from an fsde couldnt be done.

thanks man...

ultimately, once the motor is built and i've got a solid 200+ ponies at the wheels NA, i'll probably throw a large shot of gas and slicks at it and try for the outright 1/4 mile record...would be nice to "retire" the car from active race duties with a respectable time...

Mind you, if all goes well the race car will be done before it gets to that stage, so we'll have to see....

Maybe this guy (steedspeed on the forums) who is an authorized vendor on this forum could make us NA guys a good intake manifold. Here is a link to his website:

yeah - or you could design the manifold yourself and have any old fabricator knock it up for you... designing one isn't hard, and the beauty of doing a custom piece is you can tune it to exactly what you need/want.

A mass produced manifold will be tuned for a specific power band, probably on JDM cams - put bigger cams in, and the manifold is useless. Decide you want more top end, and the manifold is useless and so forth.

NA manifold design is a tricky business..... You're best of doing the maths yourself, getting a basic design and then getting something made just for yourself.....
