Junkpunch - Do you consider a triptronic an automatic? How about the F1 paddle system on the ferraris? You don't use a clutch to shift the gears but you can still manually select them.

Well those sort of blur the lines, don't they? The Tiptronic is a great tranny, no doubt. There is still a delay in shifting though, because the shift is done electronically and not mechanically like with a manual with a clutch. I've spent a lot of time driving a 2001 A6 with a Tip, and it's about as close to a true manual as any auto I have driven. Not sure about how the F1 paddle system works. Obviously it works pretty well or they wouldn't be using it!

Junkpunch - If I remember correctly, the F1 system uses 6 servos to disengage and reengage the clutch(yes, it does have a clutch!). Now, the time it takes to shift gears using the F1 system is still faster than shifting a 6spd gearbox. Only problem is with control using the clutch.

ok i am sorry...got a little annoyed..just want some respect..which i definately got from the porsche..which i am sure had problems cause it was tryin...but u would be surprised what a cold night, good fuel and a CAI can do...and i will one day have a NA p5 speed demon..and that day is comin soon:p

hey akhilleus,

go here... www.injen.com now go to the testing page. see all those cars? read up on them. look at the matrix or the corolla. they also have 130 hp claimed by the manufacturer. they dyno baseline at ~120whp but the protege dynos only at ~100whp. get over it, man... your car as well as my car is a slow piece of s***. even after adding all that crap to your car, you won't be seeing more than 120whp, guaranteed. and i am being way generous. why don't you dyno it and see. and about you beating all these cars... blah blah blah... when the car doesn't want to race you, of course you're gonna win! don't talk your trash till you take it to the track. only stupid morons like you would take it to the streets and kill innocent people.

Search and you will find my dyno. 116WHP! All that after only 3 mods. 130WHP is within reach with a header, cams, cam gears and proper tuning.

Isn't the F1, Ferrari and the BMW M3 SMG uses squential gearbox (mis-spelled?) and it has a different design than our sportshift?

Anyhow I raced my friend's V6 Mustang once... I jumped him off the line till 3rd gear but of cuz we all know what happened afterwards.... at around 55-mph..... middle of 3rd gear, he just flew right by me.... my poor porr P5..... pedal to the metal still no use.... oh well I said... it's okay... 1/4-mile down the road.... several twisty turns and end with a U-turn jag handle.... goodbye Mustang!

"not bad bro, you can drive!" said my Mustang friend... well.... in my mind I was saying the same thing to my P5! me like me like...

Yes, I think that's what makes the Ferrari system different than the Tiptronic - the Ferrari is really a manual tranny, with a "shift by wire" system that rev matches and engages/disengages the clutch for you. I think the real advance of that tranny was the speed of the shifting.

i don't doubt it, blown. i know it's in there. the jspec engine gets 160hp to the crank. so i know it's attainable. i just also know you won't get more than 150whp with his minimal mods. that's all i'm saying. and his rationale for using other makes of cars as his benchmark for an estimate is just plain ignant. like i said... you can mod the matrix with the same mods as you would a protege, and all else being equal, the matrix will produce more hp because it baselines higher. that's all.

what are u talking about..what people..i live in the farmlands of jersey...and i never exceeded the speedlimit....anyway the corolla and matrix suck...they are way slower...its all about gear ratios here are my cars speed stats
1st gear 0-40
2nd gear 41-75
3rd gear 75-100
4th sux havent put it over 120
so there hp or not in a quick reving engine i can do decently
anyways whats your issue..so quick to talk s*** huh..u have to take into consideration way too many things..s*** the matrix with 180hp doesnt even reach anything powerful until redline...there is torque considerations, gearing, hp/torque curves..whatever and i CAN say that i have 150+ and maybe 130+whp if i see someones dyno at that and they have less mods .....RIGHT

Who's Dynosheet states specifically that they produce 130 WHP and has less than: a drop in filter, pulley and exhaust.

Please link us to this Dyno sheet.

Also, take into consideration that power loss from the engine to the wheels is significantly greater in an automatic, versus a manual. The bone-stock, automatic P5 dynos at 98HP 100 lbs/ft torque. This is a loss of 25% power over the posted engine specs of 130HP and 135lb/ft torque.

Therefore, even if you had 150HP at the crank, only about 113HP would be making its way to the wheels.

Furthermore, if your statements thus far are true, we must be lead to believe that a drop in filter, underdrive pulley and cat back exhaust will produce in excess of 30WHP.

Thoughts ?

How do you actually know it was trying??/

it must be your 10" alpine pushing so much air it's acting as a pseudo-jet blast, creating a thrust similar to jet airplanes. i'm not talking s***. i'm calling you on your s***. there's a difference.

might i remind you that you yourself said that there was another car in the way... so that in itself put them at risk, since obviously, you were able to catch up with them in your "race" with the boxster.

so to get your 130whp... you're gonna start at ~95, being an automatic... then add 10whp for intake, 10whp for pulley, and 10whp for exhaust. too bad in the physics of automotive engines, 10+10+10 does not equal 30. get over it. you're talking bulls*** until you dyno it. and until you dyno it, i'll keep calling it what it is.. bulls***.

What kind of mods do you have and how do you know your HP? Have you ever dyno'd your car? I have and I'm running 116HP at the wheels. Considering the baseline run of 100HP and the drivetrain loss, my P5 is putting out around 150HP at the crank.
BLOWN wrote this check the replys dumb ass..and yes higher octane fuel u must use with an intake and exhaust more air=more fuel/better fuel i easily gain a couple horse from good fuel..i have a"ping" with regular
.... oh but u wouldnt know cause you dont have those type of mods..............now who is the idiot
oh and wait i am sure your billet antenna seperates the air and reduces drag?

guys, be a family, be encouraging, Sometimes things happen that's hard to understand when you're not there, I understand where you all are coming from but please don't fight about it. Chill and clam down.

I am not going to take side on this one cuz it's no need to, just chill. Let it go everyone. It's Friday, don't start your weekend here with a fight, please??? :D

You have a ping with regular? How so? Does it reduce HP?

edit: I once ran 100 octane ($5.50 a gallon) and I got ping! Is that what you did?

ping

now my car runs bad on regular....detonation is a ping...too little fuel for the air....better mileage and hp with higher octane and it cleans my injectors win-win right...it also works in the other way too much fuel/octane too little air and u have detonation too...no detonation for me at 93 but 100 probably would

akhilleus is right how higher octane gas adding more HP. It has been proven that cars equipped with knock-sensors show a minimal gain(2-3whp on a stock V8 mustang) when 91-93 octance gas is used. There is hidden HP in all engines. Switching to a full synthetic oil shows a gain as well. Just for fun, my friends replaced the oil in a DC2 with Motul (5w something) and it showed a 2WHP gain in the top end.

Regardless of the gain, does spending the extra money on gas and full synthetic oil outweight the extra hp?

umm... ok... so blown's car is pushing 150 at the crank... intake, exhaust, and hyper ground generally will give you the crank power increase to about 150. that's a no brainer. but what you lose in your drivetrain is significant. blown's dyno is a far cry from standard. there was a p5 in tucson here who dynoed his car with injen cai, racing beat cat back, and he gutted the second cat... guess what his dyno numbers were on a 70 degree weather day? 108whp. mmm hmmm... and you're gonna sit there and tell me that you're pushing 150whp? give me a break!
