Mysterious Air leak from tire

:
2007 Mazda CX-9 Touring
I have a slow air leak from one tire. I figured it was time to replace all 4 since it was 5 years that i had the originals. I went with the yoko paradas. Even now with the new tires the same wheel still loses about 1 to 2 psi a day. My question is where can the air be leaking from? i don't see any visual damage on the rim. They all look the same to me. Can anyone give me an idea of where i should be checking for this air leak. All input would be greatly appreciated.

Can you take the tire off? If so, fill it with air, get a bucket of soapy water, and then cover the tire with the soapy water. If you really have a leak, you should see the soap solution start to bubble from the source of the leak. Maybe it's a nail?

So what you are saying is that i possibly got a nail on the new tire as well. The leak is from one wheel in particular. I had this leak before i replaced the tires on the car and i am still having the slow leak from the same wheel. I will do that and see what happens. I would be very shocked if that was the case. Anyone else with input would be greatly appreciated in the event that it is not a nail or object inside the tire.

Did you replace the valves when you had the tires replaced? It could be a faulty valve. If not, check the wheel.

I had a similar experience on one of my previous cars. The affected tire with a steel wheel would lose pressure very slowly but never really went completely flat so i filled it up every other week. Finally took it to the tire shop where they dunked the whole wheel into a tub of water and found that it was leaking through one of the welds. Not very obvious since the leak was small but you could see tiny bubbles leaking out. Not sure if that could happen on an alloy wheel but it might give you an idea where to look next since you replaced the tire and it's still occuring.

Hi Danz, Ceric

This happened before i had the tires replaced. When i went to get my paradas they only replaced that little schraeder valve thing. I figured that after the tires were replaced that i wouldn't have this problem anymore. It is still occuring with this one wheel. Danz how expensive was it to fix the wheel when it happened to you. Also maybe you or ceric may have an idea. Could this be the tpms? how expensive would that be to fix? and can a tire shop do this repair or replacement (rebuild) of the tpms or am i stuck with the dealer. Ceric what do you mean by the valve cores?

valve core is the schraeder valve thing which you said they replaced. Sounds like you have a leak in the valve body of the TPMS. Maybe the valve body itself is damaged or maybe around the gasket where it seats to the rim. putting some soap water on it would bubble if that's where the leak is. The only other place is could leak from is around the lip of the rim.

Mine was an issue with the welds on a steel wheel so I found a replacement for $50. I dont see any welds on the alloys so not sure if it could happen. Since the tires are new, i would be suspicious of the tpms valve body as well. As suggested by jerry, make a soapy solution and spray it liberally around the valve and the lip (both sides) of the wheel and look closely for bubbles. May be slow forming bubbles since it's a small leak. Oherwise, you may just have to take it back to the place where you got the tires replaced and ask for their help.

maybe you had a leak around where the bead of the tire meets the rim, and even though you got new tires, perhaps they did not clean the rim before mounting the tire and the tire was not sealed well?

I have a slow leak on the right front... about 5 psi a month compared to the other 3 tires which lose about 1 to 2 psi per month. I would put money on tpms sensor body coming loose from the last mount/balance. Getting some yoko's in December and new tpms sensors so that should take care of it.

Helbigtw you are losing air on all four? I am losing air only on one. That happened before i replaced the tires. I am suspecting tpms sensor or rim. How much to replace the tpms sensor body. I have only mounted and balanced one time and that was recently when i changed the tires due to age. This was happening on one wheel before the tire replacement. I figured that the tires were old and needed replacing but i still have the same problem. Unfortunately for the time being i only add air due to taking care of family problems and trying to navigate myself to work due to hurricane sandy.

if the wheel and tire have no visible damage then my money is on your valve stem assembly. Most reputable tire shops "rebuild" these when they replace tires. More than likely the gasket is not sealing as well as it should. While you have the wheel off pour some soapy water onto the valve and i bet you will have a leak there.

no, I'm losing air on the right front. It is normal, especially when it's cold out to lose 1-2 lbs a month. My right front is losing about 4 or 5lbs a month.

I finally took it in to where i got the tires. He found a screw then checked the whole wheel and tpms and used a hot patch for the puncture and something to seat and seal the tire to the rim better. So far so good. Hopefully it will stay that way.
