My K&N: Very Important; Please read my last post w/ bracket photos.....

'Just installed it a few minutes ago, and went for a short spin. No hesitation through the rev range (hiccups, etc...). And yes; you hear the BOV (in about every gear), and the Turbo spooling quite nicely.

I have no Dyno, but it seems defintely more responsive, and the idle is perfect. When I wind it out, it is totally sweet. I will report later tonight, after more driving today. I like it!!

I love my MAZDASPEED!!!

So it's really as simple as disconnecting one thing and replacing it w/ the cone? No holes or anything need to be drilled, no tweaking of any kind?

ARG#7, How much do you love your MAZDASPEED? :p

Anyway, the cone filter looks good. I knew i should have put in my ractive cone filter last week. I'm missing out on the BOV sound and spooling. :( . Did you need to use a extension to get the bolt off infront of the air box? I had problems using a normal torque wrench accessing down there. I t's about 5" deep and i can't seem to have space to work down there.

How did you pull out the sensor clip that goes into the air box on the right side (located on the upper right side of air box)? I'm afraid if i pull too hard, i might rip it apart.

Albert:
Hi! No real hassle at all, and I can tell you...I'm not that mechanically inclined. A 10MM socket will remove those bolts holding the airbox. You will need an extension. You will also have (2) horizontal bolts near the intake tube where the airbox connects. You will remove those as well. There is also a little plastic (flashing) connection at the very bottom of the airbox, which you cannot see. Mine just broke loose when all the bolts were removed. The sensor in the top of the airbox just works loose. Wiggle it back and forth to remove it. You will install that sensor in the base of the K&N filter. I drilled a hole in the base (pointing toward the end of the cone). I used about a 7/32 drill bit, and then I worked the sensor into that hole. You want it tight. Keep the rubber gasket in place on the air intake (where you disconnected the airbox). When you place the K&N over it, it will be good and tight. Tighten the clamp supplied with you K&N RU-3580, and you are done.

Now: an update on the K&N performance, from my perspective. I have found no more hestitation (hiccup) while accelerating. I tried and I cannot make it happen. Horsepower increase? Not sure; but I wouldn't be surprised if the K&N added an additional 5 or so HP. Maybe more. The throttle response is very good - improved, in my opinion. The weather here today has been rainy, and cold, but I still spooled hard in some open areas - quite nice! I think it is defintely worth the $40.00 I invested.

Did you used to have the hesitation before the installation of the K&N filter?

Sometimes,,yes. I think everyone has - nature of the beast, I guess.

I'd be curious to see if it returned with the K&N filter. Keep us informed!

Indeed! I will keep it posted, as I only had yesterday to test it. But; the fact is, the car is breathing better now. 'Just might be the difference. I can tell you - $40.00 well spent - no question!!

ARG#7.
i'm not sure what you mean by hesitation, but have you ever gotten the hiccup effect? Where you're down on the throttle at more than 50% in a high gear and suddenly you back off the throttle and the car jumps forward as if you did a bad shift ?

If that's what you mean by hesitation, i'm going to install my cone filter at once!

yes,,,,,,,, I also referred to it as a 'hiccup' in another post.....very maddening!! I have also noticed that under medium-hard acceleration it will act like it's starving for fuel kind of hiccuping). This is more what I'm referring to as the hiccup effect. It's gone now; at least as far as I can tell. Don't hold me to it; but since I installed the K&N yesterday morning, I cannot make it happen, or has it happened, since.

Sounds good to me, but i'm sure it might come back in the near future. Maybe you're just enjoying the K&N so much you don't even realize it. I really doubt a filter can clear up that problem. At least, if it's gone it there could be a smaller hesitation rather than this huge choke.

I'll put on my Ractive Cone filter in the future if i can get my hands on a extention! Then i'll see if the hiccup is still there or not.....

Yeah! Today's another day! We will see.... but I do like the difference so far.

So, all you had to install was the cone filter? No other pipes or tubes?Do you know if I can just use any cone filter to replace the stock one? Thanks for your help.

Here's the one I have..... (no other pipes or tubes needed)

Not sure about using others; but this one fit right over the intake. See my notes, and replies above. Hope this helps!

The sensor will need to be removed from the stock airbox lid, and installed in the K&N; as indicated above.

here....... I copied this from a previous post when I was replying to Albert in this same thread:

Do you know if i have to keep the air box sensor?
My ractive cone filter is steel on the back where youd rilled your hole, so i can't drill a hole through that....
What would happen if i don't keep the sensor? Can i just tie it up and leave it hanging?

That looks good AGR#7, but won't the CAI that SpicyMSP is working on get in the way if you were planning on getting it?

Well; it's either one or the other. I had already ordered my K&N filter before I knew anything about Injen developing the CAI, and working with Steph's MSP.

Good question. But; I'm not sure about 'not' using that sensor. Wish I could answer that.

you can also make the hiccup come if you are in like 1st or second gear and accel up to like 2500-3000 rpm and then let off the gas, you will hiccup like mofo.

looks like a good install AGR, glad to hear it helps
