02' Protege ES (Gone)
16' Mazda 6 sport manual
OK for the last couple month I've been readin thorugh as many posts and topic as possible, Tryin to decide how I want to go about upgrading my Protege ES. And to be honest its kind off overwhelming. Im still not sure if want to go N/A and have the satifaction of accomplishment of gettin the power, the hard way. Also having the response of an N/A, or if I want to go the route of Turbo. I do know however that I want it handle like its on rails. Look at my sig you'll know why. I know I will have to sacrifice some ride quality for that but its worth it to me. My ultimate goal is to have good balanced car( i've read around 200whp is good for that), that is still strong enough to compete. Yeah I know I just said I want a car that ride on rails. Leave me alone. Yes I know I can buy cars that are already like this. I want to build one.

With that being said. What mods can I do before I have to make the decision on N/A or turbo. or to narrow it down for you, before I have to worry about fuel managment and every thing that goes with it(pump, injectors,Regulator. etc.), I want to try to knock that out in one stage. Cause Im not ready to comitt on either yet. Like if I were to get High compression pistons, I couldnt do turbo unless I get another set of low compression pistons. Keep in mind I have to worry about emissions for now.......my current mods are..well look at my sig. My cash flow is really good now. And I know the sky is the limit, for what I can do for the Pro, if I want to spend the cash. I just need some help getting there.

Thanks for bearing with me and this long ass Post

Making 200 WHP with a N/A tune is very difficult. But it is posible. I would find a small inexpensive turbo kit to throw on there real quick and then you can focus on your handling mods..... But that just my 2 cents

blackrose is right N/A will be hard. I would advice go turbo, much easier and from reading posts its more bang for the buck. MAM is bringing out a budget kit, look into that if you dont wanna spend to much. Do suspension mods before you worry bout anything else. Get yourself some tokico struts, some eibach pro springs, swaybar kit if you like, or rear one only (still dont know if better to do both or if rear is enough). Get yourself MAM catted midpipe, and go with a header for now, if you aint going wiht turbo yet, and if you got enough cash laying around.

200 whp N/A will take far more cash then you'll ever want to spend. Not only that, your chances of blowing the motor is just as good as doing a turbo and running low boost (from what I've read, I'm no expert.). That's kind of been my problem with modding. It really is just a call you'll have to think about. 4-5k and your done (turbo) and have a pretty reliable car. Or 5-6k N/A and run hella compression and worry all the time. I say if you have the money go N/A so we all can learn. Good luck.

Yeah Im thinking im going to go the turbo route. I already intended to build up the motors internals. knowing the problems of the weak internals of the protege. Money really isnt an issue right now but, Im not really happy at my current job, may be looking to do something else. which will most likely be less money.

Any way. I just have to suck it up, and choose. Im lookin at getting the AWR sawy bar kit from Ken. maybe the Coilovers too. As for the power, I just want to do it right and not half-ass it to get it done,Whether it be NA or turbo. Quality and Reliabilty is the most important thing to me.

Thanks again

Mike

nooo,,, go N/A route and let me know how it goes, lolz
i've decided to go N/A route myself and about 180whp
if u change ur mind and decide on N/A, right now u can get OBX Header from ProtegeGarage.com for limited time.
but like hughes412 said, N/A route will be $$$
good luck man

peace

Go with a hiboost kit and you'll be complete to make at least 215 with no problems.

will getting the head ported and polished help with the breathability issues I hear about

I really think a hiboost kit is the way to go if you want 200hp.

Its a plug and play 200 on stock internals.

thats 200 hp to the wheels right? how much does a stock MSP make to the wheels? Also, I know this is the Mazda forums but does anyone know how much HP a 06 Mustang V6 make to the wheels fully stock? how about a stock RSX?

new stock v6 stangs make 210 i believe... heavy as hell tho... way heavier than the previous gen.

i went the N/A route and really enjoy it

a quarter mile time of 16.2 is slow, but i could care less, i love my car and it's a blast to drive
