My First Mazda Protege !

Just bought a 2000 Protege DX Model. It's got 93,500 Miles on it. It was well taken care of by my friend who had the Power Train Warranty up until 2 months ago. So he changed Timing Belt & did all Requred Maintenance up to this point. If I continue to take as good care of it as he did, how many miles can I get out of this little engine ? Thanks. You'll see me on here now that I'm an official Protege Owner.

Welcome to the forum. Considering that some of the other guys (and girls) on this forum (not me of course ) beat the crap out of their Proteges and most of them are still running, I'd say you should be safe for a while.

I've owned it for a week now. I have to say I'm liking it a lot. I've gotten the speed thing out of my system. I had a Caddy Seville V8 which was pretty quick. So this little car is a big change for me. Question: Are the Tranny's on these Protege's reliable ? Anything I should know ? Tips ? I'm not planning on doing any mods. My friend did a bunch before he sold it to me. New backs lights, Fog Lights in front, Tinted Windows, Sony Xplod Stereo with Ipod Adapter, etc...I'm just looking for reliability at this point in my life. It i could get 200,000 in the Mileage Dept., I would be both happy & satisfied. Wow, 300,000 as long as I drive in Reverse ? I have to try that ! Thanks for all your great and replies.

Well I made the upgrade , because I had a 1990 Seville which I got tired of putting $ into. And believe it or not the Premium Gas I used for Caddy gave me 22 M.P.H. But the heater core & Radiator fried, so I bought the Protege' from a friend at work. Really loving driving this little guy. A lot of fun, for sure. I have a question about engine idling. Sometimes, the engine kind of purs real load while i'm idling or in Neutral. Maybe it's just I'm so use to the sounds of the Caddy. But I'm really liking the car and any tips you guys can give me about keeping Engine & Tranny in shape welcomed. Thanks.

I know it's not what you guys want to hear but I like the car just the way it is. It's got some minor bells & whistles, Fog Lights, New Back Lights, Tinted Windows, Great Xplod CD with Ipod Integration, Keyless Entry, Alarm, etc...Those are enough for me. I guess I'm easily satisfied.

I picked up a 2000 dx about 5 months ago, and it's been running fine. I'm of the same mind as you, I want it to last a long long time, so any mods I'll be doing are going to be cosmetic. Other than that I guess just take care of it and it'll last longer
