MX-6 AutoX/Track Potential

Thanks again for all the advice and guidance. I'll keep everyone posted if I find a sheel that will work for me.

Ryan: your car seems similar/identical to what I'd be looking to do. Are there any parts or things you would have done differently a second time around? or are you still in the testing stage?

Sorry for all the questions, but...

Also, I assume I should look for the V6 LS model. Were these made without sunroofs and spoilers? Would it be better to stay OBD-I? Any specific year that was better than others? How reliable are these cars (it wouldn't be a daily driver though, I have my BMW)?

The thing I wonder is what would be a better DSP car....the MX6 V6 or a Mazdaspeed Protege? Discuss....
PS: I think SM76 is selling his MSP..and it already has a ton of goodies on it.

Sm76 is selling his car. As far as DSP the protege would have far more power with the added boost that you can run. I think there are enough suspension mods allowed that it would be a toss up in that department. Weight advantage would go to the mx-6

Excellent question...I've debated the MX6 vs MSP in STX with Gavin a couple times...he thinks that equally prepared to the rules it would be a toss up, and come down to the driver. Given the added HP to be made by the MSP with Boost, albiet heavier than the '6 and the fact that suspention and tire offerings are quite similar...It may very well be a tossup again...

Always ALWAYS testing :p Done differently? Sure, I would have spent more money on the suspention likely with Koni DA's, or possibly a KW setup. I don't regret the TEIN's, for all my knowledge they've worked very well, and very reliably so far, however I do somewhat feel I'm getting to the point that I can take advantage of a double adjsutable strut, instead of just a single adjsutable. Other things? Not much.

I would most certainly recomend the V6, you'll be able to make gobs more power than you ever will with the four cylinder, and weight difference isn't that great since the FS 2.0 is an iron block, where the KL is all aluminum. You can find them without sunroofs or spoilers, but the ONLY ones I've ever seen without sunroofs were very very early '93 vehicles, with production dates in 1992. Non-Spoiler ones are slightly less rare, again more '93's came without spoilers, however it's always an option to be rid of it, and put a 3rd brake light in the rear window, which is what I've done.

If you wanted the absolute lightest, you would want a non-sunroof, non-abs, non-spoiler cloth interior early production '93. The HP and TQ numbers are slightly different as well. The '93 is rated at 164hp @6k rpm 15Xtq @ 4500rpm while the '94+ is 164hp@5600 160tq@4000 IIRC.

Reliability? In my own experience of owning my 4th MX6 LS, (not including my Sister's) and multiples of it's chassis mate the Ford Probe, they are VERY reliable. The biggest problems I've had are with distributors, which are common to many early '90's Japanese cars. I've replaced as many distributors on Honda's and a few Toyota's as I have my Probes and MX6s

Would it be better to stay OBD-I?

I'd most definitely recomed staying OBDI, as putting headers on the OBDII model eliminiates the Pre-Cats and you still have to deal with the secondary 02 sensors which are there to monitor catalyist efficiency...in other words permanent check engine light with the pre-cats gone...And you still have to weld extra bungs in the headers for the secondary sensors.

Did I miss anything? :P

Oh, and here she is in her element, on track at Miller Motorsports Park straight Piped and some nice clips of AutoCrossing :)

Jesus cristo! That thing sounds like a damn rotary w/ the straight pipe!!!

I really love how the KL-ZEs always seem to sound (with a damn muffler! lol). There's an MX3 around here in SM w/ a swapped KL-ZE, and it sounds awesome :)

Ah, if only I could run a KLZE and be STX legal, I would very much like the extra 35hp and wider torque band :)

I do have one sitting in my garage, perhaps for the future :)

d'oh! I read KL and assumed it was the KL-ZE. Which motor is that? Still sounds great :)

I think that the v-6 in the US spec MX-6 LS was the KL-DE. The KL-ZE was a JDM performance version of the same engine.

wait...little off topic but i have never seen those options did i miss something?
Its in the motorsports catalogue and then have to be scratch built. I got a quote of $7400 for the triple adjustable motons. JRZ also has specs that they used for the old Mirko Racing Mazda 626s that ran in the older speedvision series. Those can be replicated for $7600?

I didnt call penske.

I'm running mine in NASA time trial, and the championships are at Mid Ohio in a week.

check out the posts by http://www.mx6.com/forums/members/piers14.html

he is the most hardcore 2nd gen mx-6 racer i know of.

hehe Craymond from Team TwoFast continually runs the V6 KLZE in his previous CHip Herr SpeedVision World Challenge Protege.. without a scratch..

www.twofast.ca, he uses same setup as the old mx6's that were raced back in the day of the Speedvision touring car challenge..

he is a bit underpowere for supertouring but hella relaible. hehe

I want to see that car race...that would kick a LOT of ass.

Then I want to race on course with him...Pehaps I can convince him to come to the 'Ring when I ship my car over to meet up with and play with Peirs14 :D

Just got back from the NASA National Championships. I won the TTF class. If anyone is interested in getting on any road courses, check out your local NASA group www.nasaproracing.com

My car was pretty close to stock, but benefited from:

Hankook Z214 tires
AWR rear sway bar
Cat back exhaust
camber bolts
Carbotech Brake pads
