So I have noticed that lately ABS goes a bit trigger happy lately and the steering wheel shakes like a furry rabid squirrel... checked on my pads, and sure enough they need to be replaced.

So what do you guys recommend, that stay at the stock level, but wont gouge my wallet?

Pads aren't to expensive, try one of the vendors. I have a set of metal masters about the same as stock only once have I had any issues but that was after quite a few hard stops from stop light to stop light against my friends eclipse and then thy just smoked for a few seconds.

I got Green Stuff pads from Crossover's website, they were cheaper than what the dealer wanted for stock pads and they seem to be working great for me.

I just installed the Centric rotors and PosiQuiet ceramic pads. Overall, very smooth brakes, nice stopping power, although i'm still breaking in the pads slowly by not braking too hard. I got them from TriPoint for $199 at the GB. Try calling them up to see how much you can get it for.

i got KVR pads from Corksport, they werent to bad on, and I could feel the difference between them and the stock breaks and they are better IMO
