Msp Bov?

i am on this site trying to help a friend out. he is getting a 03.5 MSP on friday and was looking at parts for his car. he read that if he buys a BOV it wont work right and the engine will stall. is this tru? the main reason he wants one of course is because of the spray sound. he said something about a by-pass valve. can you get these and have them make the (psssssssssshhhhhh)? i saw one company(forget who it was) that had a BOV w/BPV in one. how would this work?

if you have any opinions or answers plz post. thanx for ur time

You cannot run a standard BOV because our cars have a recirculating system. Basically, the MAF sensor reads air coming in right at the filter, so when the valve purges, it must keep the air in the system so that there isnt a false reading. Instead we have a BPV(bypass valve) that does this. A standard BOV will release into atmosphere(the hissing sound) causing a shortage of air that makes the car stall and bog. The only way to get around this and to run a BOV is to move the MAF sensor onto the tube coming of the intercooler to the throttle body. Its very contraversal, but there are a couple of people in here that have done it without problems.

There are also several people running standard BOVs.

I've seen one set up with a Greddy Type S and custom alluminum piping, that JDM Sam sells, in person. It sounded great, exactly as it was supposed to, with no stalling when let off under idle (about 7-10 times). There is always the risk that if you rev up to redline and shift to neutral it may stall do to the incorrect air reading.

I'm having this set up installed on my MSP this weekend or Monday and will let you know how well it works next week.

I moved the Mass Air close to the Throttle body and ran a Blow Off well before it, at the turbine. Works fine...Less Filling.

What kind of hard pipes is he running on that setup??

It's only 1 pipe, custom alluminum pipe with welded greddy flange made by a shop here in Dallas. The rest of the pipes and the vacume line locations are all stock.

JDM Sam sells the comlplete setup in pieces or all together. Send him a PM if interested.

JDM SAM Sent you a PM,

lynchy77I think that would be what your friend is looking for. You should tell him about the FMIC's out there... oh yeah!

just get some hardpipes to replace the plastic ones and run a dual (bypass and blow off vale) setup with no worries of stalling and still the sound and performane you want... :D -mike

I have a vented HKS bov with hard pipes. I have a very minor stalling issue, but its easy to learn to drive around.

vroooooooommm..psssshhhhh :D

jdm sam is currently vending the IC pipe and flange set up. pm him. he gets no turkey even with the injen (as seen in the vid)

I have the injen too... with no turkey, just like discreet and 505zoom. zoom vroooooooom psssssssssst (lol2) -mike

Tell him to try the solution that we came up with here, on this forum.

Read about it here:

...the turkey cus that's "wastegate flutter"...

That is not true.

This is another way to eliminate the stalling, but I'm still not convinced that the maf will hold up under higher boost.

I did that for awhile on my earlier setups, and got sick of it. Trust me, it's awesome to go back;).

His car appeared to almost stall in that vid, and it wasn't even under load. I can't say for sure because I haven't seen it in person, but his car doesn't seem that much different than mine when I was running the HKS open-vent. It would stall if I let it.

505zoom thats pretty cool...good work. But now im more confused. This is what the guys at Forge Motorsports say,

Most of the time the "turkey" sound, as you all call it, is wastegate flutter. This flutter becomes more apparent with additions such as boost controllers. A CAI or BOV (Vent to Atmosphere) project the sound much more.

There are currently two models of valves, BPV and BOV. The blow off valve is our DV004 which uses twin pistons to eliminate idle issues. We are making silicone transitions, 25mm-19mm, to incorporate this valve into the factory plumbing. The Forge recirculating valve (BPV) upgrade will bolt directly into the factory hoses and not need any extra hoses as it is manufactured with 19mm ports. We will have pricing and part numbers available over the next few days for those interested.

We are working on a Silicone hose upgrade kit for the intercooler piping and intake hose. Stay tuned for this also.

They got a BOV that works with the speed with no stalling issues...but the turkey is still there. If you want you can PM them and talk to them...tom and George are super cool. Bring up the compressor surge issue and see what they say...

Im not getting rid of the turkey...I like it too much.

I thought i liked the turkey until I heard the greddy and ssqv in person and I was like "F#CK ME"!!! why didn't I do this in the first place... now i'm hooked lol -mike

Not me...I love the turkey. I hear way too much of SSQV, Greddy, Turbo XS RFL. Turkey is unique. Well the forge BOV sound like the turkey with a gush of air...gobble, gobble, whoosh. Just not as loud. Hopefully cory will put some sound clips on.
