Hello Everyone,
I completed a Manual Transmission / Transfer Case / Rear Differential fluid change a few months ago and I want to share my thoughts and give some adivce to those who want to try it out.
1.) You will need either four jack stands or a set of ramps and 2 jack stands. Its very important to get your car nice and level in the air when doing this.
2.) Start with the rear first - its the easiest and will give you a little experience pumping the oil. On pumping the oil - I purchased the gear oil hand pump from Amsoil, DO IT. Its worth the 10 bucks, there is no way you can do this without a pump of some sort.
3.) After 40k miles , my rear diff oil was BLACK. It was aweful. I was kinda suprised.
4.) Transfer Case - Here is the trickiest one for sure. The fill hole port is WAYYYYYY up inside the car. Before you drain the transfer case --- be sure you have the ability to take off the fill plug. You will need some extensions and maybe a breaker bar. My bolt was very hard to get off ... so I used a deep well socket attached to a 36" breaker bar. Due to the all the crap in the way I could get a 1/10 of a turn , but with the breaker bar thats all you need to free the bolt.
5.) The oil fill tube is the size of the hole in the tranfer case. This means you can actually plug the hole with the tube and over fill the transfer case!! No biggie, it will just all spill out when you realize what you have done. Trust me
.
6.) The Manual Transmission case has the mose oil. It will come GUSHING out. Be ready. You probably want to loosen and partially remove the top fill plug before hand. This will allow air to enter the case and stop the oil from "glugging" / pulsing out. You can kinda control the emptying rate with the fill plug hole. Pull it all the way out and its Niagara Falls... partially out and its a controlled stream.
Over all - After I was done and I causiouly drove for a bit, I could feel 1st and 2nd loosen up and feel nice and smooth again. The Amsoil is very nice and I recommend it. The tread showing the bolt locations is very good, use it.
Total time from putting out the ramps to taking the car back down... 2 hours. I took it slow and made sure I was doing it right.
Good Luck!
