MS3 competition ;-)

Still not a supercar! All the did is put a huge engine in the back of a small hatch, and change a few things on the looks. Hardly a supercar. I call that a street rod.

i'm going to have to agree with redspeed. i wouldnt say they only changed a few things on the looks. and if it does go to production this certainly wouldnt be the final form, the tranny and suspension would be altered to throw down some crazy numbers like a supercar.

From VW Vortex:

By:Jamie Vondruska and Wes Grueninger

- 6.0l W12 12-cylinder twin-turbocharged engine mounted in the back.
- The engine is cradled in an aluminum subframe.
- 650hp and 553 lb-ft. of torque (!)
- Over 6 feet wide and only 4.6 feet tall
- 0-60 3.7 sec
- Top Speed 202 MPH

Changes from the regular GTI:

"Our goal was clearly defined - despite the dramatic technical changes, the GTI W12-650 should remain clearly a classical GTI. To that end, as many parts as possible were carried over from production GTIs such as the headlamps, doors, hood and tail lamps".

C-Pillars as part of the engine air intake:

"Our largest challenge," says Klaus Bischoff, "was to supply the six-liter mid-mounted engine enough air without diluting the silhouette of the GTI. Side inlets had to be used and optimized for breathing, and the aerodynamics of the car had to be reworked so that we could achieve sufficient cooling at the rear axle. The C-pillars were redesigned by hand in such a way that we allowed the rear windows to cant slightly inward. So engine air is sucked in through a gap between the window glass and the C-pillar".

Carbon fiber roof is a diffuser:

"This GTI moved the wing inward. The roof is part of an enormous diffuser, which provides sufficient down force on the rear axle. It is made of carbon fiber and forces air over and under the tail spoiler to obtain a perfect amount of pressure on the rear axle."

Is not a supercar designed from the ground up, but with all those changes, is hardly a GTI anymore.

If anything its boarderline! I'm not gonna get in an argument about it, I was just saying my opinion. A supercar to me has to first have the wow factor. It does have the wow thats ugly, not wow that looks really fast. I give them credit on the car it's different. What if you took an ms3 and put a 4 rotor turboed mid engine, made it rwd and change the outside some? Would that be a supercar? Not in my opinion, it would be a Japanese hotrod! A super car is made from the ground up. It has it's own engine, its own chasis, and looks exotic. The #'s are good but not supercar good. I'm sure it will have a hefty price and they will improve on the numbers but its still not a supercar in my opinion.

Your right, I never said it was a supercar. The only part that I disagree is in the definition of supercar. If you read the link I provided in post #18, you see the usually accepted criteria for a supercar:

-Design (mid engine, rear wheel drive)
-Power to weight ratio
-Acceleration
-Top Speed
-Handling

It also meets the other criteria like rarity and focused design. But it also does not meet the criteria of not being a modified production car (which it is). Like you said and I said in post #22, it's not a supercar made from the ground up.

I didn't say it had no supercar qualities, just said it was missing one of the key elements. It's def. a different car and I would love to drive the hell out of it. I don't really go by what the true definition of a supercar is anyways, it's mainly what I see as being one. In a factual sense it could be a supercar but not in my mind. You give a good debate though.
