MPG's

Hello, I recently went 385 miles using 8.4 gallons for mpg of 45.8....This was with 3 people plus a filled cooler with a mixture of 90/10 highway/ town......The highway was at 70mph..........The lowest I have gotten was 40.5 mpg.....5 speed with now 5000 miles on......I use 1st gear to get going them upshift at 4000 rpms or so thru the gears until proper spped or 70 mph , whichever comes first......Ive yet to go beyond 5000 rpms.....Its a fine engine with a nice body being lithe, agile & responsive.

Did you use the cruise control at all? (I've read in a few places that the way Mazda implements its cruise control causes worse gas mileage than not using it.)

I dont have cruise control on the Sport....I believe its the way I broke the motor in and that I rarely use the brakes or come to a complete stop by incorporating the traffic characteristics ahead of me into my plan of driving.....I will soon see how fast my M2 will top out at being my best at this point is 108 mph....I also feel that having 46 years of motorcycle experience helps determining my various shift points varying with road and traffic conditions....

Ok....how this...I decided to see what is possible with my M2....shifted at 3000 rpm maximum cruised at between 2500 & 3000 rpms...one (1) person in car..15 miles rural the rest highway ..227.2 miles used 4.1 gallons......55.4 mpg.....

What Octane are you running? Standard 87 or 93? And where are you located? You're getting off-the-charts mileage.

i average 42.3

But again, I'd have to ask what that's based on. I've certainly had my 40+ mpg tanks, but here in MD it gets super cold, it gets super humid, We have lots of hills, I end up using a lot of AC, and I carry at least one and sometimes more passengers on a relatively regular basis. Over 19000 miles, 9 months and 68 fill-ups my real life, calculated, overall average is 34.6mpg (which is damn good considering that the advertised mpg is "up to 35mpg").

I know they can be a good asset, but people can't just assume that a quick peek at the onboard computer counts as calculating your average MPG.

I totally believe that your basic average is around 40 for the first 800 miles. But keep good records and check back in at 8000 miles and lets see what that number is.

How on earth can you get 55 mpg's?
There's something wrong with your car, or your drive was mostly downhill.

I always use high test and Mobil 1 oil....I may change to Amsoil and see what effect that has...I was extremely surprised at my mpg of 55.4...Remember that was under virtually perfect conditions out and back for both trips thus no down hills only....Way back in 1973 I had an early RD350 that got perhaps 25 at best mpg......I will do periodic mileage and post them.....

I did another highway mpg test .....I switched from regular Mobil 1 to Mobil 1 extended, 1 person in car (me), high test gas, 168.8 miles on 2.9 gallons for 58.2 mpg....Drove at 60 to 65mph........I have read that there are only 2 class 4 synthetic oils being amsoil & mobile 1 extended....I also talked with an avid amsoil dealer who said that the same thing and that mobile 1 extended is the only oil that can be mentioned in the same sentence as amsoil.

ElZoom, how many miles do you have on your car? Also, what's the octane of the gas you're using -- I'm guessing 91 or 93? (It's likely the gas you're using doesn't have any ethanol in it, which seems common with "premium" grade fuel -- maybe our cars just hate ethanol?)

I have 5500 miles and I run high test 91/93 octane.....Funny thing is I changed the oil & filter at 450/1200/5200 miles and just the oil filter at 2200 miles.......seems like there are only two actual 100% synthetic oils ( class 4 ) being Mobile 1 extended and amsoil......I will do some mpg tests at constant higher speeds and report my findings.

Well... I'm about one gas tank away from my 20K miles oil change, so I'll be switching back to Mobile 1 and upgrading to 92 octane. We'll see from there how it goes. Just the roof rack alone guarantees I wont' see the 50mpg range, but low 40mpg range with suit me just fine.

I may be doing some experimenting with higher octane gas as well. In my Mazda 3 I'm used to only ever using 87 as the car is specifically tuned for it (you'll get worse mileage with premium since the ECU has to adjust the timing significantly), but maybe that's not the case with the 2.

Have just passed 2800 miles, total average is between 35 & 36 MPG. Record my miles & how many gallons each time I fill up. Had justified the purchase based on getting 35 MPG - right on track for me.

That's what I've always thought, but Elzoom seems to be proving the opposite.

I will be doing some more traveling next week so my plan is to wax the 2, maximize the tire pressures, take off the antenna, gas up, put some gumout in the tank for the injectors, and run out and back at 65mph and see what results. The 2 has a compression ratio of 10 to 1 so using highest test means a longer smoother power stroke than using tainted low octane gas.

I thought that was only true if the car was tuned to utilize it? Different timing and such?
