MP3 shift knob threading?

Did some searching here and discovered that the MP3 knobs have a different thread than other Proteges and Miatas. Anybody know what the tread measurements are? Or anybody know what other car's knobs have the same thread? Or anybody who makes SCREW ON ball knobs that will fit?

I'm looking for a ball knob but I want one that will screw on the original shaft.

just get a thread pitch guage and measure it....and if you don't have one...go somewhere like AutoZone and they will measure it for you...then go from there.

I think I got this from Sir Nuke a while back. Just recently received their catalog and looks like they offer custom therads upon request.

Yeah, that's a cool link, with decent prices too compared to what others are charging for shift knobs. Do they sell to individuals or is it strictly wholesale?

Check out the kartboy knuckle ball

the stock MP3 knob won't fit the Kartboy SS, so it stands to reason that the kartboy knob (which WILL fit the SS) won't fit the stock MP3 shifter.:)

So basically if one wants a Kartboy SS and has an MP3, start looking for a knob as well correct? Hmmm which also means a waste of my old shifter knob too. :(

From what I remembered, Sir Nuke bought a custom shift knob from them. So I guess they also do business with individuals.

Yeah, I hated having to get a new shift knob as well, especially when the OEM is very nice. Just more money down the drain that need not be.

I realize it's not entirely related, but it's too much of a coincidence... I just replaced my shift knob yesterday myself on my P5 and went through all the stuff you're talking about. If it's any help, the P5 threading is 10mm x 1.25mm.

I was visiting some old friends at Cornell University in New York, and was able to borrow a thread gauge and some dial calipers from their machine shop in order to measure it. Then while I was there, I mounted up an old billiard ball in a lathe and drilled a hole and tapped it with the correct threading to make myself a new shift knob! The whole process took about an hour. It works awesome! It's quite a bit bigger than the stock knob, but I like it a lot.

Good luck with the MP3 zbillster!

I might try the homemade approach too ... find a nice wood ball, stain it, then drill it with the correct threading to fit. Just gotta figure out the correct MP3 threading.

YEP...you got that URL from me...and YES, they will put ANY threaded insert into one of their shiftknobs...all you have to do is tell them the thread pitch.

they sell retail....so YES you can contact them and have about anything made....

and IF you want something that isn't EXACTLY what they show in their catalog...ASK!!

The shift knob I got from them....in the catalog it shows them available in either 2 inch or 2 1/4 inch....I thought that was a bit big...I wanted something a little smaller.....the owner, whom I delt with directly and is in charge of the shift knob division, told me NO PROBLEM....but the smallest they could go for the speicific style I wanted, because it had to be engraved, was 1 7/8 inch diameter....so they hooked me up....I am very satisfied.
