motor rebuild question

So i have decided to go forged this winter.
Can i switch out and rebuild the bottom end under the car, through the oil pan?
Can i swich out the rods and pistons without pulling the motor out?

i know its kind of a stupid question, but i just need to know if I were to just replace rods/pistons, how would i go about doing that?

As far as I know you still want to get the block honed. I haven't done this yet myself so I'll let someone with experience chime in.

port and polish , honed cylinder bores and to rebuild the engine you most likely need to remove the engine when i did it i removed the engine since it will save time from getting up from the floor to remove the piston , rods etx.

Yeah, I would definitely recommend taking the engine out, getting it built properly (bored/honed, etc.), having your crank balanced, etc. Better to do it right the first time.

if it were me, i would just buy a bare bones block and good crank, and do it outside the car, never hurts to have a spare complete shortblock, if you are going to do this though.. no reason to deal with doing it from under a car.. 1000 times easier outside the car!

+1 for that idea. Although if you really had to it is possible to change the rods and pistons and even hone the cylinders (with a ball hone) while it's still in the car. If you are doing that much work and spending that much money already better to just do the whole thing the right way.

No it isn't possible. In order to remove the sump there are 2 bolts on the inside of the bellhousing of the gearbox behind the flywheel which has to be removed before the Girdle/ main sump section can be removed. It is not possible to do it with the gearbox and flwheel in place.
Everyone else makes the good point, do it once and for all....

theres a guy selling a motor out of a p5 that spun a bearing, it looks like a mess, but do you think it would be ok to build from?
The motor had almost 200,000km on it.

AS long as you don't have to overbore the crap out of it.. I'd find one that's in good condition.. it also depends on if you are going to .020 overbore, you don't want to go more than that. Seems like a lot of km's on that engine.. but if it looks to be clean and in good condition, then maybe it would be okay. I just personally wouldn't buy it without looking at it first hand, in person, and maybe even having a machine shop check it out to make sure it's not going to need to be overbored more than .020.

even if you could rebuild the motor with it in the car, it would be like wrestling an octopus putting it back together. this is one thing that you don't want to half-ass, so just go ahead and pull it.

I think TBK performance ( HIBOOST ), in Miami , rebuilds the motor without taking it out. I remember reading about it somewhere around here. I'm sure it can be done. But everyone knows it much easier out of the car...

honestly, if it were me...


i woud pull the motor, strip it of EVERYTHING, go to a machine shop and get it hot tanked and honed out...

i would want to start it fresh with no blemishes or anything on the motor..

Yup, mine got an acid bath at the machine shop
When I got mine done, I took the entire engine there (minus the wiring harness of course..). They built it, and then reassembled everything for me so all that had to be done was just to drop it back in.

I built my motor in my garage, the project started off withthe motor still in the engine bay. But then after MANY hours I found out about the two bolts on the tranny side. I ended up removing the motor. All and all I will remove the motor and tranny first and complete next time. hope this helps.

how ironic , i was driving ,racing an ser , and i saw a red 3 , sounds like it was pulling crazy power i talk to the guy turns out hes geting the car worked on at tbk lol hes a good friend of the owner ill see if i can ask him about how they rebuild there engines

im new to all this rebuild stuff as well....why do you want to have it bored if you spun a bearing, i have piston slap and im not exactly sure whats wrong and im wondering if boring is really something that needs to be done....please explain
