Motor Oil, What to use, what to buy whats better

If you can get your hands on royal purple, go for it. It is the best stuff. When I lived in texas, you could pick it up at any NAPA auto store. Here in Michigan, it is impossible to come by so I use mobil 1 10W(wow) 30.
Get your local company (NAPA) to get it from the Keystone Catalogue. I asked mine to get some, and now they have to stock it because of the demand for it.

ok, since I live in the panhandle area of texas during school and head home to austin every now and then, I am getting mobil1 but which 1 would be better? 5w30 or 10w30?

Get's a bit colder in the panhandle than it does here in dallas during the winters,
I mean, you guys actually get snow and what not. But me, here, I use Mobile 1
10-30 year round. Dealer told me that you could go 7500 between changes
with synthetics, but I change it every 5k just to be safe.

There may be some brands out there that are margonally better, but Mobile 1
can be found just about anywhere, and unfortunately, my apt. complex has a
policy about doing any repairs/maintnence on the property so I have to go to
quick change/dealers for my oil changes. :(

TheMAN points out that true synthetic oils use ester based stocks with no organic content. Examples of these oils are Red Line, Torco and Spectro. On the other hand, Mobil 1, Amsoil and Castrol use PAO base stocks that are derived from organic materials (mineral oil) in the production process. The Feds allow a PAO based oil to be labelled synthetic if the mineral oil structure is modified, but these are not true synthetic oils. This is why I use Red Line oil in my own engine.

Interesting, I guess you do get what you pay for...

I'm going to stick with Royal Purple. Just because, I basically asked the local Napa to stock it for me..

What's the deal with AMS Oil. Is it good as well?
